Golf clubs free on Ryanair to Portugal??

I heard a rumour that Ryanair were offering to take golf clubs free on flights to Portugal. I can't find any reference on the Ryanair site. I know they did this a couple of years back but stopped it fairly quickly. Does anyone know if there is any truth in the rumour?

That was definitely the deal last year - I was going to use it on my trip. It was for a limited time only.

I was in Portugal recently & the guys who brought their own clubs paid over €100 for the privilege.

Most of us used Clubs for Hire & we had some excellent sets waiting for us in Faro. Approx €50 for the week.

I used this opportunity to try out a complete set of Taylormade R11's.

I'm not surprised if Ryanair dropped their charge but next time I'll probably hire again. A chance to experiment & less hassle lugging clubs around!!!

    Top service that clubs-for-hire

    no hassle
    if playing 1+ rounds its a no-brainer

and a great excuse to try out new clubs as you say

    I would also recommend clubsforhire.

We used them last year when a group of 14 of us went to portugal, great service. clubs ready when we arrived.

We are using them again this year.

    +1

Guy carried all (4) hire sets out to the hire car area & helped load them up too.
My mate was convinced he was checking the hire car reg. so he could double check with the car hire folk on local addresses given. Said there had been 'loads' of cases where lads fly their hire sets back home afterwards. Found that hard to swallow tbh. I thought the hire guy was just being super helpful.

I thought you had to pay my credit card or leave CC details when hiring clubs to prevent this?

Yes you do have to give CC in case of breakages/theft etc. I always take out the extra insurance that covers everything for about €7 I think.
I have used them in Faro since they started and wouldn't even think of bringing my own clubs over now. As mentioned above it is a great way to try out new clubs ;)

So wouldn't this stop 'lots of guys bring the hire clubs home with them'?

I posted the original query. Thanks for replies. I have been going to the Algarve for early-season golf for 4 years now. For the past 2 years I have booked with playbettergolf-algarve.com. I think it is fantastic value for the 5-night stay at Formosa Park apartments + 3 rounds of golf - €270. This includes a round at San Lorenzo, one of the best courses in Europe. Golf clubs will be delivered to and collected from your hotel. You can add an additional round of golf if you wish, (I have played at Vale da Lobo, Ocean and Royal), and have the lot for less than €500 when you add in Ryanair flights and club hire (€40 for Calaway). Contact at playbettergolf is Tom Van der Ham, a really helpful guy who will tailor your package to suit you.

It might not stop them from bringing them home but the charge on their credit card for the clubs afterwards might just make them regret it!!
Have a look at the prices charged if the clubs are lost/stolen:

I plan to go on a golfing holiday later this year and was considering using the clubstohire service. However the cost of covering stolen clubs has put me off completely

Based on that pdf it would cost around €2400 to replace a stolen set of Taylor Mades and it is still over €750 if I take out insurance. What a rip-off

Yes, the replacement prices quoted without insurance are way OTT but you would have to be very unlucky/careless to have the clubs stolen. I am sure those prices are put there to discourage theft. Damage on the other hand can happen to any player as I found out last time! Went to hit a 5 wood off the deck and the head took off after the ball! (And no, I didn't break it in anger :P) Luckily I had taken the extra insurance so no charge. I am sure there is probably an insurance policy out there that will cover all eventualities but I would hate to pay the premium (€€€€)

There are insurance underwriters who specialise in certain products.
One of these is car hire excess, and generally speaking they are a lot cheaper than taking excess cover directly from the car hire companies.
Have a look around the net and check out cover for hired goods.
And always check with your holiday insurer and your household insurance policy as to whether they would cover such a loss.
Generally (again) it's cheaper to take multi trip insurance than take insurance from the holiday provider / agency.

In fairness this would put me right off as well - could easily have the clubs stolen and it would seem to take the ease out of it searching around looking for an underwriter!

Aer Lingus only charge €30 each way to carry clubs, if you are staying more than a week its cheaper to bring your own as clubs for hire charge €60 per week for Callaway or T/made clubs

I'm heading on our annual trip to Fuengirola with the lads and this is putting our group off renting them.

It's a great service and price is just about right however this is madness.

It's the costa del sol, hotel room getting robbed wouldn't be something I'd be suprised at!

So much so I sent them an email, not complaining but letting them low we'll be passing on their business for this very reason. Hopefully they look to underwriting this risk in the future and I'll definitely be on for using it.

No Legal expert here but if in the unlucky situation they were stolen, surely you could offer to replace them yourself (at normal prices) if refused and brought to court would love to see how a judge would view this

Not one myself either, but if somone agreed to the T&C's then I'm not sure a judge would entertain your case for replacing them. You've signed a contract at end of the day.

Maybe the premium on these factor some form of loss of earnings.
