I love science - but which one to pick?

    Hey there!

    I'm doing leaving cert chemistry,

    I love any type of science related to health, food and people.

    I don't want to do a general science degree, any advice out there?

    I've been looking at food science, or medicinal chemistry,
    And I really don't have a clue what to pick!

    Help?!

    Are you in fifth or sixth year? Surely you have a career guidance teacher? He/she would be able to help you with this.
    Check out the modules covered in each of the courses and see which one you find more interesting and appealing to you. Maybe get in contact with the university you want to go to and ask them if they can get in contact with previous students of that course for you.

    In the end, go with which one you think you'll enjoy more.

    I am a science graduate and I now lecture in that area. My advice is don't dismiss a general science degree. It is a great background to have and very respected in both academic institutions and workplaces. Most 'general' science degrees are only general in the first year or so and then you branch out into your specialised area-subdivisions within biology, chemistry and physics. Some universities allow you to do a joint honours degree ie. specialise in two areas eg physiology and pharmacology. UCD have a great variety of subjects within their general science degree. If you don't know what you want to do but you know you like science a general degree can give you a great taste of what is on offer. It is much easier to start general and then specialise rather than specialising and then discovering you don't like your specialised area. There are a huge variety of MSc programmes on offer all over Ireland and the UK that allow you to specialise in very focussed areas of health science. Talk to your career guidance teacher. You need to look at the science pathways in the various universities alongside the more specialised courses eg medicinal chemistry and compare the various options. Good luck with whatever you decide.

    Fifth year,

    My 'career guidance' teacher suggested I do medicine in the UK...
    I don't want to leave Ireland... or do medicine,
    so I think you can see that she's terrible!
