    Hi guys,

I'm in secondary school, love science of most kinds and also geography, and would like to do something people-related too.

Any comments on food science? Is it a good choice regarding career opportunities and any general advice too?

    Thank you

I did food science in UL, and I'm really happy I chose the course. It is hard work, a lot of projects and a lot of hours each week about 23-28 with labs and tutorials. First year is just general science trying to bring everyone up to speed but then it gets more specialized from 2nd year on. It is a fairly good degree to have career wise, Ireland has a huge food sector and many companies who are expanding are looking for food science graduates. You could also go into the pharmaceutical side of things if you wanted. You can work in areas like Quality assurance or Research and development. Some food companies are looking for Food Science grads to work as a part of their marketing teams due to their knowledge of products. And as everyone has to eat it's a degree that can take you to any food company around the world!
Very Chemistry based, but even if you aren't doing that for your LC I wouldn't let it put you off.
    Best of Luck!

Hey i'm studying Food Science in UCD. It sounds pretty much like the UL course, begins with an overview of science in first year and second year and begins to specify more for food in third and fourth year. There are a lot of hours each week as there are labs and tutorials. There is also a work experience aspect in third year which gives you a chance to actually work within the food industry and see what areas you would be interested in. Overall i'm really glad I chose the course!

I did Nutraceuticals in DIT which is like Food And Pharmaceutical Science. I'd agree with the above, general science first year. Then we specialised in 2nd-4th year including an industrial placement in 3rd year.

I loved my course and I'm not doing my PhD in UCD in the area of pharmacology of nutraceuticals.

From my experience meeting Food Science grads from the other colleges I'd say DIT offers a really hands on experience. I've found UCD is very specialised towards Milk. UCC offer a great course.
