    4.20 Catterick

    Carmela Maria 10/1 NAP

Although she's got to put a couple of disappointing efforts behind her, the latest coming over todays C+D when running 6lb out of the handicap in a much better race than this, I still think Carmela Maria is more than capable of scoring off a mark of 93 at her favourite track where she has a tremendous 1-1-3-1-F-7 record over this C+D in handicaps. A horse that did me huge favours when landing a right old touch back in December when she was scoring in the same event for the 2nd year running off the same mark of 85 and it came as absolutely no surprise to me that she won well as it was clear that connections had been targeting that Class 4 event for quite a while. She did so in good style, pulling away after the last to score by 5L in a weak enough event despite not travelling overly well for a large part of the journey. 10 days later at the end of December she tried to repeat history for the 2nd time in consecutive years when sent off the 100/30 favourite under a 7lb penalty and she travelled an awful lot better than she did for her latest victory and there is no doubt in my mind she was going to take a hell of a beating that day before falling at 4 out. It was a shame to see her go down but luckily she didn't seem to do any lasting damage. Her 2nd last start came at Sedgefield on the 11th of January where she finished a well beaten 8th but that is of absolutely no concern to me as she is a completely different horse at Catterick - as suggested by her 0-22 record away from the track.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed with her latest effort when putting in her first poor performance over her favourite C+D when finishing a disappointing 29L beaten 7th, as she was under pressure from a long way out but that 0-125 handicap was clearly too tough for her racing 6lb out of the handicap but she'll find things an awful lot easier in this 0-105 rated handicap. Although its going to take a career best to win today as she is 3lb above her last winning mark, I certainly think she's up to defying it. Back in December 2011 she scored by a comfortable 7L (27L clear of the 3rd) off a mark of 90 from a horse who scored on his only subsequent outing off a 5lb higher mark and perhaps even more telling was her 1L defeat in this race last year off a mark of 102. Under today's rider and regular partner 7lb claimer Edmond Linehan, she was given a patient ride and was worked very nicely into the race and looked to hold every chance going over the last but couldn't get there in time as she had to settle for a narrowly beaten 3rd. The form of that race has worked out nicely with the winner Howizee, who probably one a shade cosily, winning 2 starts later off a 2lb higher mark impressively as well as getting beaten a head off a 19lb higher mark 3 starts later and he is 22lb higher than his success that day. Looking through the opposition, none of her rivals are in great form at all and this looks an extremely winnable contest - so much more so than her last race. A little faith is certainly needed to back her and although there are a couple of unexposed types in the race the fact that the current favourite races from 4lb out of the handicap says all you need to know about this race's quality. Off a mark that I am sure she is more than capable of scoring off and over a C+D where she clearly thrives, I will be desperately disappointed if she doesn't at least place but I'm quietly confident she can register C+D victory number 4 and extend her tremendous record at Catterick.

That's her done for the season. Looks to have spat the dummy out a bit. Dropped back to a distant last before running on again strongly at the finish. She'll go back to other tracks now with her blinkers off to get her mark down again and they'll go back to Catterick next season. No doubt in my mind she's more than capable of winning off 93 when in the mood though. That fall seems to have knocked her enthusiasm quite a bit.

Btw...annoyed with the horse not you rossom. The way it ran on, it was well capable of a place.

I dont back much these days but had the two favs either side of that race at lingfield. Both finished second thanks to terrible rides from the jockeys.
Roll on cheltenham where they will be all trying.

No worries. Don't think Ed Linehan is at fault at all to be honest. Was giving her reminders and she didn't respond.
