Help with front derailleur cable

Hi guys, I new to cycling and only got a bike 2 weeks ago.
I took it out for a few short spins and noticed that there was some chain rubbing at the front chainrings. I decided to adjust the derailleur with the help of YouTube but I think I've made a complete mess of it.
I have a Shimano 2300 set, the front derailleur is a Shimano Sora and that's my total knowledge of what I'm dealing with.
I followed all of the instructions as per the video but now my chain is stuck on the smaller of the 3 chainrings and won't change up. When I shift the gears to go up the cable goes slack. It's tight when on the smaller ring though.
My bike doesn't have a barrel adjuster so could I have done something when I disconnected the cable from the derailleur?
Any help at this moment would be great, I've spent the last 2 hours going around in circles.
    Thanks in advance.
    B

When you have the cable as slack as it will go, undo the nut on the derailleur, pull the cable tight and re tighten the nut. Check your shifting then.

Thanks Lescol, I feel so stupid now. That worked a treat. I suppose it's easy when you have the know how and I have a lot to learn.

    Thanks again.
