honda accord 99-02

    Im looking at theses cars,but have very little experience with hondas,looking for 1.8l manual petrol.
    So any hints for what to watch out when buying one ?
    also do all of them come with vtec engines?how reliable are they as some of them have very low mileage around 100k (easy to clock ?)
    any advices of owners are appreciated thx.

    That generation Accord is probably the most reliable saloon ever built. Very little goes wrong in them, the engines are excellent. Buy a clean one with a good history and it shouldn't let you down.

    Common things that go wrong with them are the oxygen sensor (happened to my one and the one my sister had) and I also had the alternator fail. My sisters 1.8 had 180k miles but she had to change it for something more fuel efficient as she was driving ~90 odd miles daily weekdays but it was still going strong, she went for a diesel civic.

    I also had to change my exhaust and front brake calipers, but I think that was down to my car being a UK car and driving on salted roads all winter.

    Only problem I ever had with mine was the alternator went (cost around €100 to fix). Other than that I had no issues whatsoever; loved every minute of driving it. Very comfortable car, not terribly expensive to run, decent bit of power from it also. I'd have no hesitation in buying one again!

    Engine should go forever with basic sensible servicing. Some of these were affected by Honda's main relay solder problems. Headlamps will haze up but can most likely be restored with a bit of elbow grease. By no means a Honda specific problem. The car I'm thinking of also had some door handle problems and window (regulator? motor?) problems after 12 years, 180k miles but not a huge big deal.
    Dependable cars and great value. Found the 1.8 vtec I drove a bit dead at normal revs, Mazda 626 felt like it had more torque. (The accord should be more reliable though)

    At a guess, any low mileage ones were owned by older sensible types who probably looked after it. If you know an obliging mechanic who will come to inspect a car for you then I'd buy private for maximum bargain.

    Super reliable car, had a 2.0 ES with leather interior and BOSE stereo and loved it.

    Can I ask you what are the symptoms if the oxygen sensor is on the way out? I only wonder as my Accord lately has a minor issue, which is worse when the car is cold. It feels like the engine has a slight misfire or is a bit hesitant when you accelerate. Nothing major when you get used to it but it can catch you out until it warms up. Some forums reckon on a blocked EGR but not sure really. Want it to be 100% before I change.

    To the OP, I can honestly say it's been the most reliable car I ever owned and way more reliable than any 04/05 Audi's or BMW's I've had.

    Will be changing soon but only because I now need an automatic.

    Plenty of auto Accord Mk6s out there. I was researching the MK6, they're the only car I've ever seen that buyer's guides are non-existent because they're so reliable.

    Thanks, yeah I am looking at the moment. Almost want to try something else at this stage just for a bit of unreliability :D

    Mine was a petrol ... the symptoms of the oxygen sensor were that the car had extremely low revs on idle and could cut out. Also there was higher fuel consumption and I have been told that if you drive the car like that for extended periods you could destroy the cat converter.

    Thanks for that. Mine is also a petrol, 1850cc. I have no problem with the revs at idle so far. Fuel consumption was always a bit heavy but I only do mainly short journeys anyway. It sailed through the NCT only 4 weeks ago, not that that always means anything.

    thx for all the replies only couple more question does the 1.8 count as 1.9 on road tax or 1.8 as some write down as 1850cc others 1.8.Also do all of them have vtec engines ? as people write vtec others i vtec and so on,as i dont know how many different engine models there are,also is there difference between ones pre 00 and 01-02 models ,as i know most of them have electircs and sunroof as standart,but there are some that come with more extras,from one side i see it as a plus,but in long term less electrical components less something to go wrong. peace :)

    I have a 1998 1850cc Accord. It is incredibly reliable and trouble free, they just seem to keep going forever. Tax is in the 1.8 band. I no longer need a large car, so I have just advertised it for sale, but I will miss it.

    It's a 1.8 for tax, it's in the 1800-1899 band. Normally when the manufacture describes it as 1.8 it's something like 1797cc - so it's in the 1.7 category. Anyhow.

    The are all VTEC engines and there was four engine models available in the MK6 a 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 (yee-haa!!) and 2.3. In Ireland we go the 1.8 and 2.0. Solid lumps, and the 2.0ES has all the trimmings. The 1.8's varied in trims.

    The 98/99-00 were facelifted in 01-02 but minor cosmetic changes, nothing massive. Personally, I'd buy a 2.0ES if I could, the tax and fuel consumption is minimal.

    Yes, bought an 01 2L Accord executive ES 2 years ago, great car, highly recommend.
