Only a few quid for flexible hose each side. Labour will be small too. Good result really.

Sorry to hijack your thread but they wont let me start a thread.previously my Peugeot failed on "Axle and wishbone bushes so took to mechanic and he duly changed them returned for re-test greasemonkey says bushes have not been done, so feeling aggrieved returned to mechanic got the car on the ramp and their with my own eyes I see all bushes present and correct, imagine my humble surprise. So back to Waterford NCT center, up on the ramp, after a little conference they allowed me to come over (its a dangerous place the sky might fall on your head) and they point to the axle where the bearing is and show me that it moves, but that is the axle I say, but look we put tippex on the axle, well that explains everything I say. On the report you said bushes, "Well sir our software isn't able to print axle so we put bushes" at this point I called him an anglo saxon Idiot and they dropped the car and refused to talk to me. Suckered. more happened, called the guards, they went through a practiced procedure, watching video to see if they had anything of me being aggressive, obviously not. Threatened by the Guards for making a noise in a public place and for answering a guard back. I did point out that I didn't think that was against the law ...yet. anyway I digress, I'm just under €400 down and I need to get a new rear axle and a retest. any Ideas, experience with dealing with with such a lack of customer care thanks Sweargen

Yeah ok, as you said in the first line, Axel AND Wishbone bushes. Did you give the report to the mechanic? If so talk to him. Doesn't sound like the NCT guys fault. And after what else you wrote, I think you may have difficulty in passing a brand new car there again.

I agree. I'd take it to another NCT centre, and less of the attitude.
    Apt username though.

when you take your car back for a retest after initially failing, do you need to bring the report from the first test with the specific reasons for failing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,042 ✭✭✭Bpmull

You do realise that nct tester are trained mechanics and have a good knowledge of cars. They failed your car for a reason. And to call the tester a 'grease monkey' that just shows how little respect you have for others. The guy was only trying to do his job he wasn't failing your car for no reason.

Calm yourself down, get the axle repaired and take the car to a different nct test centre next time.

I know it's hard to stay calm if you think you've been wronged, but as you've seen, losing the rag never helps.

What model of peugeot is it? You will probably need to get a good second hand axle for your car in a breakers yard. Axle wear is common problem on certain Peugeot and Citroen cars.

thanks for the replies peeps, here's mine, the car belongs to my 20 yr old neice I got involved when she was told by the technician, who called her "love" that "he couldn't explain what was wrong because she wouldn't understand" . the report says "Axle and Wishbone Bushes" that is what is said on the NCT report and required on one side, does that sound like a professional opinion?. The mechanic did what was required from the NCT report. over €300 had been spent and as work on the axle was not mentioned, you wouldn't be saying to your customer I want another €3/400. I repeat he carried out the work required by the NCT report both sides of the car not just one side. I am absolutely sure that their are a few mechanics at the NCT Waterford, but the majority will be trained on a course that probably lasts a week or two, (I've applied for a job as a vehicle inspection technician) after all they can't tell the difference between a rear axle and a bush. Think about the economics, two shifts a day five days a week, 1 shift sat, ten mechanics on each shift. What's the rate for qualified mechanics?. This is why they are called Technicians, they have more training on stonewalling techniques under the guise of customer service. Finally when I went into the center I spoke to the "stand in manager" who called me in when they had the car up on the ramp, he was joined by a technician, so I had two people refusing to see the blatantly obvious and repeating the phrase he put tippex on axle so my mechanic should have known. this was repeated as a mantra, because as we know if you say something often enough, it becomes true. Now in the midst of this I referred to the second technician as if he had done the job,In a aggressive manor he told me he didnt do the job, I should get my facts straight before I made accusations, so I asked what the crap he was doing there and they walked, refused to talk to me. I was led by my nose. Protection for all people from abusive behavior is a good thing. the utterance of an expletive in frustration under provocation should not be used as a tactic by employees of large organisations to stonewall us.

See this pisses me off. I recently had my lower ball joints fail the nct. After getting a mechanic to fix it i asked if the ball joints were in a state. His said they were not that bad and couldnt see why they failed. Anyway it passed the retest so the nct go go suck a dead one forn2 more years now

Is it hard to read the NCT failure report? Say Sweargen gave the report to the mechanic, would the mechanic be able to read what the car failed on and find the problem easy? Or is it all double dutch and a mechanic has to guess what the NCT where on about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 sweargen

Hi ya OMD, the report is very clear

    ITEM
    Rear Suspension

    DESCRIPTION
    Axle and Wishbone Bushes

    REASON
    Worn

    LOCATION
    OffsideRear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 sweargen

Technician is a umbrella term covering most industries, the point being that a weeks course learning to push buttons and using your eyes does not make a mechanic or even a technician. The level of skill and knowledge these chaps have is not enough to be deciding weather your car is safe or not.

What is the issue with the description above. If presented with this in the workshop I would check all joints in the area for play. On French cars with torsion beam axles I would check the ends of the axle for play as its extremely common. How can you blame the nct for this issue. ??

You are completely wrong. To be a tester in an NCT centre you have to have served your apprenticeship as a mechanic and be fully qualified. They have general workers there who dont test the cars as they arent qualified to do so.

This more than makes them competant enough to test your car.

And for what its worth a lot of the time they dont make the decision for a fail for you unless its something so blatantly obvious thay you`d see it yourself like a worn tyre, broken headlamp, bulbs etc.

The machines they use measure the tolerances of certain parts of the vehicle / emissions. If the vehicle falls out side the allowed tolerances its a fail.
