Attention all Masters (30+) and Seniors (36+). The sport has grown to the extent that the Irish Open now expects to have categories for both of these categories in White, Blue, and Purple belt. In particular we have received inquiries regarding Blue and Purple belt Seniors divisions. In our experience, many Seniors do not enter because they suspect they will not have a division. For this reason, we will offer a full refund to any SENIOR (36+) who has no one else in his division come closing date. This is to stimulate growth and participation in the older age groups.

This is excellent news, it would be really great to have more Seniors compete. I've only had one fight with another Senior guy in 3 years outside the Euros and even that was luck of the draw in a Masters division here a few years back.

Will we have the option to compete at Masters instead of the refund and will you combine some weight divisions for Seniors? I'm only asking before I go lose the 4kg I'd have to drop to make <76kg in the gi as you feel the cold more when your old? :D

You'll receive an email next week to Seniors, having the option to move down to masters . And for you to acknowledge this. We'll be doing or best to get the Senior guys an opportunity to compete.. otherwise its a refund.

Hi Guys do you have a rough projected running time for the competition in place yet? Due to a rescheduling of an event I have to corner at to the same evening I'm slightly worried.

    Thanks

    Oisin

This applies to Seniors only! There is also plenty of Masters who compete at the Irish Open.

Thanks for an extremely well run competition Liam and Barry. You've basically set the standard for how all competitions should run in this country going forward.

I thought the level of compeition was fantastic too, particularly the purple belts. The matches between Tom Bermingham and Joey Breslin and the final between Joey Breslin and Ciaran Toal were great examples of really high level and competitive BJJ. Marcus Phelan taking it to the big guys in the blue belt absolute was great too.

Well done to all competitors, but especially to Liam and Barry

I shouldn't admit it but I watched more of the Joey and Tom match than the match that was on my own table. It was great can't wait to see the tape of it.

A lot of great lighter weight blue belt matches too which is great to see.

Interesting a few clubs weren't there and the respect between competitiors and coaches was much better than before. No coaches losing it at referees and stuff so that's always an improvement.

My only suggestion for the next tournament if it's in a bigger venue would be to have a bullpen. This would mean 16 people aren't standing behind a table waiting for their division to run. Very hard getting up and down delivering divisions to the head table when you had 16 guys stretching and warming up behind the mats for their divisions.

Thanks Barry and Liam for a great day! So many crazy matches, James Gallagher, Sam McNally, nathan kelly, Richard Bukovcsan and Brendan McGarry were the most entertaining for me!

This was the first competition I've went to in Ireland and I was very impressed with how smooth it went.
The level of blue and purple belts is very high here.
