Just noticed this on the appointment form for our intention to marry appointment and I didnt know it was something that we needed to do - does anyone know about/have any details about re-registering birth of children born before the wedding?? Cheers :)

you do not have to but after you are married they will give you the option of re-registering the births with your married name and listing you as married.

Strictly speaking, a deed poll doesn't change your name. It provides evidence that your name has changed.

Someone who changes their name on marriage will generally find that they have no need of a deed poll. People will readily accept that their name has changed and banks, etc, will not look for a deed poll to confirm it.

If you want to change your name in any other context, banks and bureaucrats may be a bit more leery, and may ask for a deed poll as evidence of the change of name. You can argue with them about this, but usually the easiest course is to execute and enroll a deed poll, and get a few certified copies to show to people to keep them quiet.

its acutally for the children, one we can just re register but the other is slighty more complicated situation and can not be re registered as far as i know.

Never heard of this before. Our first child was born before we were married and I don't think this was ever mentioned. What does it involve and why would someone do it? Does it make any difference to anything if you do?

i think if your son/daughter already has the name you will be using after marriage then you dont need to do it .

I think so too. My understanding is that it's for people who had kids when single, and maybe gave them the mothers surname, and now want them to have the fathers instead?

With more research myself I think it is if the child had mother's surname and also if you want to change the marital status of the parents on the birth cert of the child
