Powering devices from iPhone port

This may be a stupid question, but I was wondering if it would be possible to run a device from the port on the bottom of an iPhone.

I am thinking of designing a product that can plug into a thunderbolt port, or the older style port that could add features to an iPhone, but I can't find any information about powering a device from that port.

I know the Nike+ device from a few years back plugged in to add extra functionality to the iPhone but I can't find any info on how this was done.

Can anyone here help or point me in the right direction for information?

You could look at the "Square" credit card.

It plugs into the headphone port - so will work with all iphones.
And doesn't seem to have a battery...

"Sumup" do the very same thing, and are based in Ireland.
