Can anybody thrown any light on the format of next Sundays race ? Can find where you sign and see a 1pm and 50/100k in the calendar but not much beyond that.

    - Separate races or combined 1-3 ?
    - Course map, distance, laps, profile
    - Sign on time, race start time ?

    Thanks Paul.

    Route: Strava link here
    ......done 3 or 6 times, it's gonna hurt !

Thanks Guys. Loughrea hurt and this looks far worse.

How many laps for the A3s? And what's the gradient like (max/avg) on the hill. Any chance of a strava upload by someone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 272 ✭✭mccutchie

Did the route recently, could do with a sweeping in sections and plenty of potholes to be filled. And yes, it hurts.

if its same as last couple of years, then its a tough circuit. Will also hurt the pocket too, think Liam charged 20 skins a head last year.

What gearing needed for the hill? 39*21 enough?

That obviously depends on what power you are putting out - where between good Cat 1 and weak Cat 4 are you? You might get some kind of informed answers if you give that kind of info ( but then again, if you are a Cat1 you are not going to be asking questions like that I guess)

If you had an 11 it would be a help on the descent, looking at over 70km/hr.

A tubby cat 3, I know technically you get a 53*12 up there -) but I don't have a 23 on my race wheels, so was wondering if a 21 should be reasonably comfortable?

It isn't mega steep. There's a couple of short steeper bits on it all right but nothing to be loosing sleep over.

Not too steep but a3's have 6 laps, may need that 25 for last couple of laps.

    last year 3 laps a4, 5 laps a3, 6 laps a1/a2

So..............if you're an A3 and not a climber and you're doing it 5 times, then I think I'd like that 39/25 on my cassette ;)

I've a 39-28 and I'll still probably blow on it  But I'm still gonna do it!!

Got the impression from calendar it was handicapped this year but if they follow last years format, sounds like there will be a separate A3 race.

View from the window is the Cliffs of Moher which is the same ascent as the climb in Broadford (190m). The thought of going over it 5 times is quite something. Best not to think really...

Anyone know what time sign on is open and what time racing starts, think it was 1pm last year

According to their fbook page https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Cycling-Pursuits-Cycle-Racing-Team/176007691811?fref=ts

"Sign on from 11.30am to 12.45pm. Start at 1pm. Sign on in the Village Hall."

There's a picture of the profile of Sundays route and there are some comments there. I've heard A1/2/3 is handicaped and A4 is separate. Not sure what time each race starts at, it only says 1pm start.

Brought everything bar the kitchen sink and my Swisstop Yellows down for the race on Sunday? Anyone able to loan me a set of brake pads for carbon wheels?

10 min handicap for the a3 riders that seems a lot. I wonder will this be given or will it turn out to be less on the day

Just drove the course and it seems we'll be having a few obstacles to avoid. Hills are tasty that's for sure. This pic was taken close to the Prospect House. Nice share of gravel on the road so be careful on the decent and when we get back on the main road there are a few potholes to avoid so again, mind yourselves. It's a windy road coming back into Broadford.

Surely the organisers will give the route an ould sweep in the morning...?!!

The 'hurdles' will very much add to the excitement!!

Will that be there Sunday?! That's an awfully big bump ... Big potholes along the climb too, I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭pprendeville

No they won't be there. Was talking to the farmer who has land there (happened to pass on a quad) and he was just pumping slurry. Some potholes alright mainly on LHS up the climb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭pprendeville

That was hard. Some hill. My descending leaves a lot to be desired as well as cornering. Blew up 3rd time up though. Good training at least.

    @pprendeville what were todays results?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭pprendeville

No idea but I'm sure Sticky Bottle will have them. Seemed to be a few strong guys from Nenagh and Blarney pulling. Well done to finishers. Put me back in my box.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,569 ✭✭✭harringtonp

Hardest of the 10 or so courses I have done, a real climbers course I'd say. Pulled out after 4 laps, was running on empty. Up to that point was always riding with at least a few other riders and didn't fancy doing final 2 on my own at a much slower pace.

Great training day I have to see, that hill really wears you down.

Wonder did many others pull out too ? Hard to tell.

definitely a lot of DNFs, super tough spin, as you say, not really a whole lot of point rolling around for 2 laps on your own

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭pprendeville

I think a lot pulled out. Went around the course with my Dad to show him and it was well whittled down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Slo_Rida

A lot of DNF's in the A4 anyway. Great weather, stupidly hard course and nice samiches after!! Well done Cycling pursuits...oh and very well marshalled too.

Personally speaking, this kind of circuit comes too early in the season for me, I did the 3 laps, was grand on the flatish stuff, but died a slooow death on the 3rd ascent, doh!

I see there was controversy in the 'other' categories !

think the general feeling of A2 and A1 riders - as they didnt catch the A3's - was that the time gap was too generous -

I wasnt there, but reading the race report, Collins' quotes and speaking to riders in the event, i wouldn't agree with this - its not his fault the A3's actually rode a bit to stay away - seems to be due to the presence of a few strong juniors - but its rare the A3's do much to help themselves in these early season handicapped events (in my experience).

You could argue that the juniors were too strong to be in there or that with their presence the time gap should have been reduced but so early in the season, this is impossible to gauge.

Good tip re braking. I made a right balls of the descent first time round so i need to work on it. Went from half way up the bunch to 50m off the back. Didn't know there were several crashes. There was a very bad section about 1/2 way down that was just filled in with gravel. Also, when I went up the climb in the car I saw one of the A1/2 group go into the gravel on the climb in the middle of the road. Pity it wasn't swept. Apart from that, I thought marshalling was very good. Cold day for it.
