If you have access to to another computer, use Rufus (make an ISO image of your Windows XP installation CD) and create a bootable USB stick and install it from there (provided you laptop allows you to boot from USB.

You sure the DVD drive was correctly reinstalled when you replaced the drive?(Presuming you removed it, its often unnecessary).

The laptop is 10 years old and does not support USB or network boot, so either you replace the optical drive or use this method:

How to install Windows XP from a hard drive without using a floppy or optical drive.

You need about €10 and a philips screw driver. Get a second hand drive from any repair shop or on adverts.ie, remove the one screw on base of laptop with disc symbol beside it, the drive will slip out when pulled, replace with other drive, put screw back in and install your software
