This set has a bit of a documentary feel. Balfey1972 has taken the POTW in a great set.

Balfey1972 can you talk us through how you took that shot of the boat and the sunset? How did you control such a huge dynamic range of light?

dnme - it is a single exposure. ISO 400 70mm at F4 at 1/3200. Shot in raw and brought up a little light on the back of the boat and a grad filter about 1.5 stop on the sky in lightroom . Just a UV filter on the lens.

Two boats of photographers headed from the harbour (02/12/12) and headed around to get some shots of the baily and ireland's eye from a different perspective. We were blessed with a glorious sunrise and light before the grey clouds and rain came in just as we got to the coffee shop for breakfast.

Great trip and very much recommended. Worked out less than €20 a head for the 2 hours out. Anyone wants the name and number of the guy that runs the boat trips pm me and I'll send them on.

A few more shots can be viewed here

It must be a very decent camera. What camera is it if you don't mind me asking and also, what part of the image did you expose for? I'm guessing that at that shutter speed, you exposed for the sun. If I did that with my 60D the boat would be nothing but clipped black silhouette and visa versa. Beautiful shot. It's rare in that it's a "massive" dynamic range but it's also an action shot. I'm assuming it's some kinda full frame camera that handles high dynamic range particularly well?

It's a 5d mkii and I was exposing for the sun. The raw file allows a good degree of adjustment. Thanks for the comments and thanks to all who voted.
    Love frostie500's image personally.
