    Lads (and possibly ladies)

My girlfriends car just failed the NCT as a result of High Idle Exhaust Emissions

The car in question is a 1.1 Hyundai Getz with only 62k on the clock

Oil and filters were dont at 60k and I also recently fitted 4 new spark plugs.

As you can see CO levels are at 56% but need to be below 20%

Anybody have any insight as to what the cause of this might be and what I could do to improve this figure before taking it back for a re-test?

Would appreciate any opinions / suggestion you might have.

    Cheers

Looks like a catalytic converter issue on the face of it. Impossible to diagnose fully just by looking at the report sheet though ;)

Yeah george, I was thinking Cat myself :(

Emission problems always seem to be hard to diagnose and expensive to resolve.

Do you think I would get away with cleaning throttle body with carb cleaner and running a bit of dipetane??

It depends. What kind of use does the car normally get? If it just tips around town and never gets a proper long and hard drive then a good fuel system cleaner, an Italian tune up and ensuring it is as hot as possible when it goes for the retest might just scrape it through.

She doesnt drive huge distances and drives the car very gently.

Believe me it got a proper italian tune up today as I was driving it all day and theres a decent stretch of motorway before the NCT centre.

So your advice would be to take it to a garage to get it properly diagnosed before the retest?

Yes, to be honest it will probably need a cat. Those Hyundai cats aren't great in our experience.
