Mobile phone companies

I am self employed, and have a company mobile, and I use Vodafone ( VF). My Wife has a mobile for Her own personal use, and is with 3.

On Friday, I got a phone call from someone purporting to be from 3 wanting to ask me about the service etc. But, her english was so damn poor I couldn't understand her and made up some BS excuse about being on the road, and busy with a customer. I told her ( at least I think it was a 'her) on Monday ( tomorrow).

After hanging up, I checked my display only to notice it said the call was made from (No Number). At this stage I got worried as I was afraid I was scammed.

I phoned VF, and explained the situation to them. They explained that it will take 2 days for my incoming and outgoing calls to be registered against my name/company. So, I asked 'can I find out if I was scammed on Sunday ( today)'? Alas, no, so will have to wait until tomorrow.

<SNIP> hell, is there not the technology these days to INSTANTLY find out who phoned You? Imagine a murder case, Garda johnny phones up, sorry Garda, You'll have to wait for 2 days???? Oh it's a Sunday, please You can only find out after 3 days???

    Anyhow, my queries are:

    a) Was I scammed?
    b) If the call from 3 was genuine, just HOW can 3 use people who cannot be understood? &
    3) HTF can VF ( maybe all the phone companies are in the same boat) not have the facility of finding out instantly who made a call to me, or who I phoned from my phone.

How do you mean "scammed"? Were you asked for (or did you provide) personal information?

3's customer service is based in India so I wouldn't be too surprised there.

The CS numbers from the mobile networks tend to be withheld or bogus - Meteor CS calls from from the number "00"

I haver read recently about people phoning oyu on your mobile, and while talking to them they hack into your phone ( don't know the full gist of the craic). I asked VF on Friday was I scammed & they said the scamming usually is from an overseas phone number ( PLEASE don't ask me to explain how it works, I have no idea). The only information I gave was my first name:mad:

That's extremely unlikely to be honest. :) I'm not sure I'd even know how that could be done.

I was specifically thinking of this after getting that call on Friday: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056878186

Perhaps I am over-reacting, just can't afford to lose any money, and certainly not to a bunch of thieving crooks somewhere outside our borders.

That doesn't sound right, why would 3 be calling YOU to talk about their services if you're on Vodafone ? Could they be using your wife's contact list or call list and calling her contacts ? How else could they get your number ? Did they address you by name ? At the very least it could be a data protection issue ?

What's happening there is due to the way autodialling call centres work.

When they call you, there isn't actually a person physically dialling the number. However when you answer the call, it is immediately routed to an operator. That's why it sounds like your phoning someone instead. The thing about the €150 credit being stolen sounds like scaremongering.

Because the account is in my name. Maybe it is all above board, but if so, then I wonder how can 3 justify using people to call You when their english is incredibly rudimentry.

Also, still doesn't answer the question about not being able to get access to the numbers that phoned You on VF for 2 days.

I used to get phone calls from O2 after I moved to another network trying to get me back to there's.

All their phone calls always came from a blocked number.

Was in touch with VF today. Turns out that call didn't even register with VF.

I was impressed that my call on Friday was logged and the bloke today was able to use it for reference. The one gripe I still have with VF is the length of time it takes before a call is registered to a mobile number. Surely in this day and age, that function could be almost instantaneous.

One thing I will be doing after this episode is steering well clear of 3.

You cannot be scammed by the simple action of answering an incoming call, most of the scare stories doing the rounds are classic urban myths.

Where they can scam you is by calling you and hanging up the instant your phone rings, their plan being that you see it as a missed call and phone back. You will then find (when you see your bill) that you have called a premium line and you will be at the loss of the cost of the call.
