Noise From Rear Suspension

Every now and then going over a little bump, or even reversing out of my drive, will result in a big clunking sound coming from the rear passenger side wheel.
Doesn't always happen but it's becoming more common. I'll even hear it going around a corner sometimes.
I can only describe it as one big clunk. Sounds like the spring is gonna shoot through the wheel arch.
The rear drivers side wheel will made a sound (again when going over bumps or ramps) like the wheel itself is loose.

The car is an 02 Mondeo, 1.8 petrol lx.

What would you suspect is the problem? Do you think it would he expensive to fix?

I should point out that the car just passed the nct a couple of weeks back, and I've noticed these noises for a couple of months now.

I'm gonna bring it to get it looked at but was just trying to get an idea of what might be causing it and if it's expensive to fix.

Ford garage told me I'd be looking at 5xx at least to get the bushings replaced...

Why the hell are you going near a ford garage with a 11 year old mondeo. Any decent indy will do the work every bit as good and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Could be a broken spring too.
You won't know until you look.
    Yeah, don't bother with ford.
Anyone that knows a little bit about cars will tell you what's up.

Anti roll bar links and bushes, rear subframe bushes and coil springs all give plenty of trouble in those Mondeos. Any decent garage should be able to diagnose the exact cause of the problem in a matter of minutes.

Rear link and bush went on mine cheap as chips to buy and handy enough fitted(if possible get both sides done, the other won't be far behind

Yeah I know it's ridiculous to go near a ford garage with a car that old. When I bought the car a couple of years ago I had it in my head that it would be best to pay more and get it seen there, how wrong I was!
Will be going to Atlas Auto Service in Drumcondra, most likey. NissanDoctor has been great the last couple of times I went down to get things looked at. (No affiliation to the garage, just my opinion).

Anyone able to give me a ball park figure on what I might have to pay?

    Can't say without knowing cause.
But if you want me to have a stab in the dark, I'll guess 100 to 200.

In my opinion the most likely culprit is a broken spring. Allow approx €120 for just one to be changed. Subframe bushes approx €200.

    Great, thanks folks
