hi, looking to get a corrado or gti golf, 16v 1.8. something late 80's early 90's. any idea what mpg they get? would it be something that could be used daily or just the weekend? also any tips on what problems to look out for on either of these cars,
    thanks,

More less the same as you current equivalent car, i.e about 30 to 45 mpg.

    Sure, it could. Why not?

Rust would the main issue. Anything else is easy enough to sort out.

I owned an 89 golf gti 16v. the car would return ~30mpg mixed driving. Great car.

    What to look out for:

Rust - around windscreen, boot turrets, under wheel arch mouldings, battery tray.

Gearbox, crunchy second gear synchro is the norm, apart from that there are no real issues or faults.

Engine, Kjet system running right? When it is running right its grand but if you get one with running issues it can be difficult to trace the issue.

Apart from that they are brilliant and easy to get parts for.

30 is a good as they get though, had both an 8 and 16 valver golf and could only drive with a heavy foot.

Corrados seem like stronger value at the moment, but neglect is probably your biggest enemy in finding a good one.

I have a Mk2 Scirocco 8v, gets 37 mpg all day long and I drive it 10k miles per yr.
Mk2 8v Golf GTI has the same engine but would have lower MPG due to weight and aerodynamics.
I agree with WicklowAndy, Corrado's are much better value.
K jet is reliable and running gear is easy to come by and cheap.

Sell those wheels for quite a lot and buy some nice bbs originals from ebay. Pity its an 8v, not as bad as you think but that engine struggled in a mk3 gti so cant think it'd be any shakes in a corrado. A 1.8 16s ok but no rocket. At least its the right colour and leather.

Bit of a boy racer special, but a lovely g60. Could sell the 'upgrades' and turn it back standard, wheels and all. Worth it to put a chip and pulley on and hear the lovely noise:)

This is nice, a real contender for an ebay leather retrim and standard cross spokers.

Plenty of vr6s, but road tax really blunts their value compared to uk. Choice on dd from under 2k. A lovely early 89 lhd g60 on car and classic uk, but crazy money.

How could you think of a mark 2 now?!;)

I'd love a scirocco, and loved one more when I drove it.

Its was just when i went to stop i found its fault;)

Theres a lovely 84 for sale on the side of the road down my way, clean in blue with single light grill. Nearly ripe for vintage tax:)

    thanks for the replies,
i've wanted a mk2 gti golf for years, now decided its time treated myself but when i went looking i saw a vw corrado and now seem to be leaning that way, would like one as standard as possible to make my own suttle changes, think i'll stick with 1.8 or g60 for road tax reasons, (3 other cars to tax).

would the uk be the place to go?

    Have a look on vagdrivers.
Last time I looked there were a few nice Corrados for sale and didnt seem to be selling. Also try gtini.com forum

These cars are reasonably priced over here now, it nearly isn't worth your while going over to UK. If you get a g60 try to get proof of when the last charger service was done.

At least one of the g60s I linked looked a nice car for the money

Needs its standard wheels back, leather from ebay and a later steering wheel to be perfect, but the supercharger on it would be a good modification, and its a good colour. To me they have to be black, grey, dragon green or violet. And while I wouldn't fit coilovers myself, if a car has them, you can keep them or sell them and change to standard.

Dont think id go to the uk for one, just be patient here, a good one pops up from time to time:)

Hopefully going to look at a g60 during the week, any idea how often the supercharger needs to be serviced?

They suggest that a standard charger with standard pulley be rebuilt every 45000 miles, with an uprated charger and/or pulley you can reduce this interval down to 30000 miles.

ah that's not too bad, any idea what it costs to get one done?

Check jabbasport, a stage 2 rebuild is 340 sterling plus vat.

I had a 86 GTI 1.8 8v in mainly urban driving I got around 25mpg. It was leaded petrol though. The later 1.8 16v and 2.0 should be better, but I would imagine you need a light right foot to get anything like 35+ out of them on a long run.

For urban driving I'm not surprised it was down to 25mpg. On motorways with a few secondary roads thrown in for good measure a reading of ~30mpg is easily attainable.

Hard to know. I also had a 2.0 Primera GT which is a similar kind of 90's 16v and it was brutal around town it would dip to 17~18mpg, usually low 20's but on a long run at 100kph ish you'd just about see 40mpg. I expect it was due to the relative low torque on these peaky 90's 16valvers. Though I seemed to get a lot better MPG out of a CRX of similar vintage. 16v.

Corrado seems a good bit heavier than the Golf. I remember testing a few back in the day. 1.8/2.0 But I could never find a decent one, they all seemed to have been trashed and the build quality of them wasn't as good as the Mk2 golf. Very plasticky and rattle interiors. The leather interior on the Corrado Storm was nice. Never got to drive a G60 or VR6 though. :(

Standard g60 not really fast, and standard starts no faster than 16v, but lovely mid range, and that sound...

Drove a golf vr6 that belonged to my friend (golf 2.8 vs corrado 2.9) a good bit, and it wasn't the tidiest, but beautiful power delivery; not a hot hatch though in the vein of say a type r
