    Hi guys,

I've had a Larson trap out in the garden for nearly a week now with no success. I'm trying to catch a call bird before I set up somewhere else. I've been using the fake nest with 2 eggs in it ( 1 broken). There are loads of magpies knocking around but none going near the trap.

    Any tips would be great

    Jimmy

There was a thread on this a few week ago and someone swore by putting a large spoon of peanut butter in the trap

take out the nest and get a dead rabbit or an off cut bone from the butcher that should do the trick.

I have a few mates into trapping and they seem to have birds virtually all year round.. i had one up till a week before christmas that id kept from august,,
Ive only ever caught one without a host and it was on the jelly type dog food,. put some on top of the trap to get them in and then they see the bit in the trap..
Theyre not quite territorial enough yet to be able to use a mirror id say,..
I had nothing in mine since fri and there are 4 flyin about there constantly,, Plus ive only been catching singles which would have me thinkin they havent paired up just yet,..

I got a live magpie from a mate of mine yesterday and put it into the trap but there is not a sound out of it. Is this normal? Thought it might take a few days to get used to being in the cage.

I find they are usually quiet but still seem to attract others

They are usually quiet but if one lands nearby and starts chattering, your boy wont be long about joining in the conversation.. I had the trap out the back of the house here for a while and dawn and dusk were nearly the only times he got chatty...

i have found by moving the cage 20 yards can make a difference, it must be the way the see it from a different angle.

place butcher offcuts under good quality chicken wire at a distance where you can see it from your house, (within your rifle distance) best near ditch or cover..

Once the fox finds it keep topping up offcuts, soon the fox will head straight for that spot every evening knowing food is available in early evening won't be long before you will work out his timelines and be ready for a shot

I always leave a few tins of cheap dog food and a gallon of water near each trap, saves you having to bring them with you every time you go to check them.
A egg or two in each compartment is great bait to get magpies and Grey's into the trap especially when pheasants are laying ,the Grey's cant help themselves.

How far from where I'm going to trap do I need a call bird from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 woodcock89

I got my call bird about a mile from where I trap an it works grand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 273 ✭✭hrcbob

Bird territories are quiet small so 100 yards away is often plenty..

hi,i have caught with the mirror, clutch of eggs in,a ferret in the call bird side, and if you are going out to shoot maggies try it over a stuffed cat or a dead one off the road !!! have it set up in a tree keep out of sight and as long as the maggies come you will keep shooting them,i feed my call bird on dry cat food and they have lasted for 2 years, some can last three days and die on you.my mate laughs when in summer i am giving my maggie a shower with the hose pipe, have it on fine,it keeps them in tip top condition but in the wild they do it,they cant in a trap so the hose on fine does the trick, have a look at my maggie trap i have made them like this for years and never fail, they mess about on the all mesh type.
