I have just lost my smart phone (or it was stolen) and I only used it for strava. I cannot afford another smart phone so I was wondering if there is a cheap way to do it, using a gps tracker for example. Can anyone help as I need to go segment bashing?

How cheap do you mean? You'd get a forerunner watch for less than € 100 I'd say second hand anyway, if not cheaper.

There are plenty of budget Android devices around that can cost as little as €50 which could run Strava

You could get a Samsung Galaxy Ace for €80 or Galaxy Y for €60 at the minute, both more than powerful enough for strava (I use strava on my Y) and enough battery power unless you plan on being out there for more than a few hours.

Sounds similar to me, I was using the Sony Xperia Tipo which was 70 euro and ran the strava app.. I only smashed it today as it fell out of my pocket so I got the HTC desire for 100 euro..

Anyway the sony tipo is a sh!t phone but it ran strava for 70 euro.

Or if the budget, I reckon you can pick up an Garmin Edge 200 for around €100. At least you get a device that water proof and not as fragile as a phone on a bike

tape a clothes hanger on your head and point it towards the strava satellite, c

    coordinates:
    Latitude: 3° 12' 43.2" South
    Longitude: 5° 12' 39.6" West

Or you can get a waterproof phone. I got my Motorola Defy Mini for €99 and it works well.

    I have this:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultrasport-GPS-Navrun-500-Heart-Rate/dp/B003XII6YS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361731249&sr=8-1

perfect for strava and sport tracks. you have to load the gpx file manually to strava is the only small downside.

I thought with your new bike Strava would come to you?

Perhaps it was insured under your house insurance.... worth a go.
Phones are about €50 now or you could keep an eye out out and pick up a second hand edge or forerunner.

This might be of use to someone. I have an old Holux bluetooth GPS and tried it out with my HTC phone. As the gps is doing the tracking the phone is only using power for bluetooth and the App rather than having the drain of the built in GPS.
I tried it out yesterday on a drive and it took about 10% of the battery for an hours tracking. Might be an option for someone who just has a phone and wants to track spins without seriously draining battery life.
Having a quick look on ebay, one of these would probably do the job for €14, then an app like this
I don't think it will work with iPhones without them being jailbroken unfortunately.

Going a little off topic here..

Was given an iphone 4 with a battery life of about 1 day, it just needs to be unlocked so I haven't been able to check it out for myself. If I'm running the Strava app on it will that just kill the battery much quicker? Just seeing before I decide to unlock it.

If the phone without using Strava can stay on only for a day, then it may be tricky with Strava. I use a phone that I charge every day when I use Strava (at the end of the day the phone still has about 40% left), but it wouldn't need re-charging for 3 to 4 days, if I do not use Strava.
    I hope that helps...

I have never used an eye phone. But surely it depends on how long spins you normally take. My commute is usually about two hours daily (up to three hours+ in nicer weather ;))...
