What would the consequences be for a person not showing up in court (due to illness) after being served with a witness summons by the prosecution?
What would the court's attitude be to a doctor's note or similar??

It's very rare, but you could be held in contempt of court.

If you are required to give evidence, they will most likely postpone the court case to another date if you are unavailable for the first date.

Possibly a warrant issued and arrest.

Surely you can't be in contempt of court when you're not present.

I'd imagine a bench warrant for your arrest would be issued.

If the doctors note is clear and shows a real problem then the prosecution will inform the court and arrange another date. If the judge is not satisfied with the note or the reasons he has the power to issue a bench warrant. If that issues the person will be arrested and brought before the court.

But you've been summoned to be present.

It may turn out to be contempt, but first a bench warrant will issue, so the person can be brought to court to explain himself.

Are you trying to dodge attending?
