Tuning Drums

Okay, been playing drums about a year and a half now, and I've never really bothered putting a lot of effort into tuning them, because it was impossible with the awful generic skins I got with the kit. However, I recently got a whole new set, and I'm having a really hard time tuning them.
They have a tendency to make whining sounds, which I'm pretty sure are called overtones. No amount of fiddling came seem to get rid of them. Anyone have any tips on getting rid of them, or at least not making them sound awful?
Also, I got coated Emperors and clear ambassadors, 10" & 12" Racks, 14" & 16" floors, and a 14" snare. I like the way my bass sounds, so that can be ignored

There's plenty of this stuff on youtube so probably better than my advice but try getting your drum key and tightening in quarter turns bit by bit alternating between the screw and the one facing opposite it.

E.G 12 o clock and 6 o clock position, 4 o clock and 10 o clock position. Hope you know what I'm getting at there.

Youtube Bob Gatzen and try his method.

There are many differering opinions as to how to tune drums. Best pick one of them and try it out. Bob Gatzen works for Evans so he's got to be on the right track! Works for me anyway.
But if it doesnt work for you, there are other drummers who'll swear by a completely different method anyway.
