STOP light on car

I was driving along m50 about an hour ago and that red STOP light came on dash and car started saying engine temperature too high. I pulled over after about 1km, as soon as it was safe to do so. I took a look at the cars manual and it said its linked to the oil pressure and coolant temperature, and as I had a bottle of coolant I topped up the resevoir, and drove home without further incident (20kms or so). It was dark and I was on side of the road so couldnt see how low it was. Would there be a possibilty of any engine damage or should it be OK?

U should never open coolant bottle when engine is as it could result in serious burns. If it wasn't overheating for to long u shud be Alright.

I would get the engine checked ASAP. Your cooland is disapearing so there is a problem somewhere and it is very likely that the engine will overheat again if you continue driving. Healthy engine shouldn't use coolant. There is some of it evaporating over time unless waterless coolant is used, but the amount is insignificant.

If you were able to top up the coolant without any issue, then the level was low enough not to bubble out at you once the pressure was released. This in itself is a bad sign in terms of how much coolant you had lost.

I had a similar issue regarding coolant, was losing about 1 litre a month. Never had the time or money to leave it in. Managed to leave it in the other week, hole in a hose. Nothing to expensive. Because I made sure the car had coolant it was alright.

I will carry a bottle with me at all times just in case, leaving it in not an issue as I have a mechanic to keep an eye on it for free which is nice when I'm a fully subscribed member of the bangernomics club now!

Could be a dodgy sensor, or the cap that simply wasn't sealed properly. Personally i wouldn't worry too much just yet - make sure the level is good and monitor it frequently.
