    Hi all
I have a 04 passat and want to get isofix points retrofitted. I rang dealership and the lady said she had never heard of such a thing! Has anyone on here had them retrofitted to a passat. If so, what is the name of the part I need to ask for when I ring the motor parts shop? I got a booster seat but it seems very loose so anxious to get this done.]

We did this before for a customer but he had sourced the part himself. If nobody else on here can tell you how to get it then I will check with him for you to find out where he got it.

Apparently a really bad idea. I'd prefer to just use the seat belts than really trust a mechanic to verify the job to iso standards.

Interesting thread on Reddit about new standards on LATCH (American name for ISOFIX) here too which applies to all.

It's a bar with 2 bolts holding it on. Literally 5 minutes work to fit. If a mechanic can't be trusted to get that much right then there is something badly wrong IMO....

Bolting in the latch to the specified torque is hardly rocket science

Its just bolt in on a passat isn't it?

I think it's more the bar that the hooks are attached to that's the concern.

I installed one in an Audi A4 today. It's a simple enough thing to do and I can't imagine it's that different in a Passat. Cost me €65 from a dealer and it's just a bar with the two fixings and two bolts.

    It's a factory VW part.

Better off getting a 131 passat with it.

I realise the parts are oem but it's the fitting of the part that seems to cause the main concerns. If there are brackets then I don't see any problem, but if it requires welding then you need to be very sure that you can weld as good as a robot in the factory.

If I was the person getting it done, I'd always have a worry that junior is gonna be at risk in the case of a crash.

On the other hand I'm all in favour of using isofix and am amazed it took till 2007 or so for the industry to finally enforce a standard and disappointed that only 5 years later they're taking about revising those standards.

Pretty certain the passat b5.5 has prethreaded holes you just bolt the latches into and torque them properly. US dealers fitted them for free on warranty when asked.

Does anyone know what the correct torque for these bolts is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭gaelicyoda

Actually, the required torque looks to be 30nm:

yeah so I did this in an old car of mine that was based on the b5 chassis.

basically you need the bracket, two bolts and off you go.

I may actually have that somewhere knocking around the place - I can check tonight if I still have it. what part of the country are you?

Bugger - sorry tmg, just seeing your message now. In the west, but I've got it sorted now thankfully.

I've attached a hi-res pic of the bags the parts came in for anyone finding themselves in the same position - you're exactly right - one bracket and two bolts per side:
    • Bracket Part No.: 8D0-813-545
    • Screw Part No.: WHT-001-230

Not bloody cheap though... €162 the lot! (I see car manufacturers too are not above the fleece-the-baby-parent sales strategy... they know you'll pay it because it might end up being the best money you've ever spent). €75 for each bracket, and €3 for each screw.

When you google that part number, you get this
    392218_x800.jpg

    Is that what you got?

This is about the cheapest one I can find online, being such a critical part, it'd want to be genuine

Hey Colm - yep, that's the one.

Exactly my thinking as well - decided to forego the online search altogether and go directly to the dealer for it.
Not often I ever do that ... :)

... and actually, the hoors didn't give me the two guides that seem to be included with the link you posted.

Sorry for digging up old thread... Looking to get this done on a 2004 Passat as well. Dealer is looking for 250 + fitting, etc... Seems insane!

Anyone have any recommendation where we could source and get this done this side of the country? We're in Galway.

thanks, is the part number just the difference between fitting to left or right side of the car?

PS: Could I not just get the parts in the wagen-shop.com link above?

Yes, you're right. They are different for both sides.

Why not from that shop? Sure you can...

Mailed the VW Customer care to ask for part info (figured good way to verify that the Audi one works for VW) and weirdly enough they replied to say it cannot be retrofitted that it's only done at manufacture.
Must be an upsell propaganda cos ours is an old model?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

how much of that bill is labour? some garages have a minimum 1 hour which could be half your bill.

    it's a simple diy job.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,569 ✭✭✭Special Circumstances

I presume the bolts come with threadlock already applied?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,302 ✭✭✭Gatica

They haven't got back to me. I spoke to the parts department, so I don't think that it included labour, hence my shock

I done this to my B5.5 I can dig you out a part number later.

Pull up the rear seat cushion and you should see 4 circular stickers covering threaded holes.

Once you have the bolt holes your good. It's only a matter of torqueing the bolts correctly.

    Can't say for certain.

Were in a buggy shop the weekend and the staff and another customer all said they'd got it done or heard of it costing 65-80 Euro, so I dunno where they took the quote from for me.
Also I checked the car and don't see bolts like on other's photos. Here's mine attached and I've a feeling we've no existing holes/bolts for the isofix :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 510 ✭✭✭The lips

The bolt holes are behind the seat back.

Fold it down to see the stickers.

You will have to remove the seat back to install

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,302 ✭✭✭Gatica

We're rightly snookered then cos we've an estate - if you put down the seat it's just the boot! :o

Thanks for clarifying, this explains the reply from VW...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 510 ✭✭✭The lips

Once the isofix mount is installed you refit the seat back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,302 ✭✭✭Gatica

I imagine this would work in a saloon. There is nothing behind the back seats in an estate. You fold down the seat and you just have a huge space opening to the boot. There's only a solid surface under the sitting part of the seat, hence any attachments would have to be to that (under the seat) and not behind the back of the seat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 510 ✭✭✭The lips

Gatica, I am certain this will work in your estate Passat.

The saloon version is the same as estate, drop the seat back for entry into the boot.

I dug up the invoice and my part numbers for bracket behind the drivers seat are

    V8DO813545 - bracket x1

    VWHT001230 - BOLT x2

    Total cost me 68euro.

See the pictures for it installed, you squeeze up the seat back cushion to see the stickers covering the bolt holes, bring a torch for certain

ok, maybe it's these things just under the back of the back seats. Sorry the picture's so dark.
I'll get those and give a garage a bell to fit them.

    woohoo! finally... :P
A friend's going to a garage today, I'll get them to ask bout fitting.

I've ordered the part from http://www.wagen-shop.com linked previously. We had a look just behind the back seat and pried off the stickers and sure enough there were screw-holes in there. Might need to take off the seat to attach the bracket though. Good instructions posted previously to http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/archive/index.php/t-33977.html, luckily they have links to images there, which seem to make sense.

Just another couple of questions... Did you have to put a nut on the other side of the bolt that screws into it? My OH thought they must do that at the dealers and that's why it was costing so much in labour to do it there, as they'd have to have access of the back of the chassis to tie the nut onto the bolt... What type of screwdriver is used to attach this? just wrench or do we need a torx one of a particular size?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    no
    it's threaded already.

Just to update that we have managed to get this done ourselves fairly easily after all. The part took couple of weeks to become available at the online wagen shop after ordering, then another week and a half to ship, 80Euro including shipping.

We borrowed a torque wrench from a friend and used the recommended 30nm setting (I think). The screws for the isofix required a torx 45 head with an adapter for the wrench that we borrowed, cost 8.50Euro.

We needed another torx screwdriver for a 10er to take off the back car seat to make it easier to screw in the isofix bracket, but I guess it might depend on the car.

To anyone else looking to do this, it's very straightforward and I'd say the parts are very similar between different makes of cars. My husband did all this himself in about a half hour and cost us under a 100, so it really was a rip-off by the dealer quoting us 1.5hrs of labour and a total of around 250 Euro to do this!
