Watched it there. Ward looked very powerful.

I know the Donegal crowd weren't happy with the Nolan victory and maybe he should have been given a standing count in the last round but Nolan had the cleaner punches.

Just also wanted to say hate him or love Kenny Egan Congrats on your boxing career. The man who won so many Irish titles and gave us such great moments in Beijing. The standing ovation was great to see

Nolan did have the cleaner punches and deserved the victory but the score line was way off. His fight with Brosnan was the same. It's not fair on these lads they deserve an equal shot. Mick Dowling's commentary was rubbish as well.

Jimmy Magee is a pure flute aswell.

He can be a bit of a historian as he likes to remind everyone mid fight, cramming as many facts into three 3 minute rounds, rather than calling what is actually happening.

Really annoys the hell outta me

Im not a Kenny Egan fan myself but does anyone here think that the scoring in his fight should have been closer that 25-5. I think he definitely gave a better performance than that score reflects.

Jimmy Magee hasn't a clue despite commentating on boxing for so many years. He's awful. He misses so much and gets so much wrong in a fight. His "memory man" routine is all he has. All those years and you'd think he'd have bothered his arse to bone up on a few things?
Why isn't he retired? Give someone else a go? Another RTE lifer with a sense of entitlement.

Surprised Moyette lost and that RTE saw fit to show no highlights whatsoever.

Ross Hickey was highly fancied, personally I think he has his number. It was a really good scrap.

    Very competitive division in Ireland.

Moylette will be a good decent pro though, has a nice style for it

Magee was cringeworthy as usual, during Katie's fight talking about everthing but what was happening in the ring. I know her fight was only an exhibition, but did anyone else think the atmosphere was a bit flat? I mean she is an olympic gold medalist fighting in her first fight since the olympic, I thought she deserved a few more cheers.

On a side note Dowling mentioned something about having one of " The Road to Rio " events with all our boxing olympians on in Milstreet. I would love to get an opportunity to go to that, being based in Munster. But I've looked online and can find nothing about it. Maybe its to be announced.

Kenneth was a great champion who owes the sport nothing. He could have taken the easy option and gone up to heavyweight, which he would have had a much better chance of winning, but chose to take on Ward which he knew was always going to be an extremely tough fight. He deserved the standing ovation, he has given the sport so much its up to Ward now to fulfill his potential and go on and do well in Rio. Egan did well to survive those 3 rounds, he was on the receiving end of some vicious shots and I though his legs were gone but he retired on his feet.

    Thanks for the memories Kenny

Yea, if anyone can get their hands on the back page of the sport section of the Sunday Indo, its well worth the read! Finally some home truths spoken out about the Magee situation. He would put anyone off watching Boxing.

He should have been put out to grass, many moons ago.

Even though it was a good article (hint: the main one on Cake is awesome) removing Magee is just window dressing, I couldn't care less and never get worked up about it nor understood why some here would fixate on it. There's better things related to RTÉ's boxing to be spreading your time complaining about.

The fact they showed no highlights of the other fights on the night, on tv or online, is a far more serious problem. They don't bother their heads to properly cover the few events they do schedule. Willie Casey had to give the tv rights away to his home world title fight for free before they would air it, if I recall correctly.

    Madness.

My main gripe is that he knows very little about the technical aspects of the sport, and cannot spot a scoring punch if it hit him on the chin.

His style of commentary consists of showing off about how much he remembers from days gone by, spouting facts that are all well and good, but not what folks want to hear at that moment in time.

He does have impressive knowledge but he is not commentator material. I've never warmed to Jimmy Magee at all in this supposed national treasure that he is, theres always an element of "showing off" about his approach, when really he has absolutely no grounds to be doing so.

wouldn't be Ken Egan's biggest fan, but he is a true warrior, went out on feet after taking another pounding from Ward
