Just after watching this and it ain't half bad. Real shame that it took so long to be released as it's vastly superior to a hell of a lot of recent big screen releases and while the limitations of the budget are obvious there's at least a decent set up and a number of good set pieces. Snipes is, well Snipes is pretty much in Blade mode and it would be easy to imagine his character here being an earlier incarnation of his most famous role.

Visually the film is gorgeous, making great uses of the open plains to instill in the film a sense of isolation and wonder. Andrew Goth is best known for the pretty terrible David Bowie/Goldie team up Everybody Loves Sunshine but based on Gallowwalkers he's a director to watch. The action is well shot and impresses thanks in no part to the fact that the tripod is kept steady and the shot in focus, something that a lot of more famous filmmakers seem incapable of. It's also rather violent with Snipes repeatedly ripping the spines out of villains and quite a few heads explode in a torrent of blood.

For a direct to disc feature, Gallowwalkers is a damn good Friday night film and while no one will ever think of it as a classic, it's easily superior to a good 80% of Hollywood releases in recent years.
