Insulation Queries

Hello all - two quick questions.

Firstly, previous extension work on our house (before we bought) has two Velux skylights in upstairs bathrooms. There is damp/mould on the inside...which I'm clearing and painting with mould-resistant paint. To minimise more-of-the-same...I understand I should insulate the skylights in the attic. Is there a recommended insulation board that I could cut&stick to the skylight ?. Am I on the right lines ?.

Secondly...our attic has floor insulation...but nothing on the roof itself. Should I be looking at something for between all the rafters ?.

I suspect I'll need get someone to have a full look at the house at some point (BER-style)...but it's difficult when trawling the internet for information to make sense of all the options.

    Thanks for any help,
    Kevin

Ammm...dont see logic of insulation on rafters...have 3 bed semi with 300mm insulation on the 'floor boards' inaulation is to keep heat in rooms below it. however you need to make sure all pipes and water tank inaulated as it gets cold up there!!!

You don't see logic in insulating the rafters around the sky light. Ok fair enough another question to b asked is the house a two story dormer or story and a half. Are the sky lights just into the attic if so who care whether there insulated or not they should have mould on them anyway. Do we need pictures to look at or is it general information were looking for here.

place 300mm min of rockwool on the ceiling if this is done then you do not need to insulate the rafters as well. as to the light well you can get kingspan insulation the same thickness as the timbers in the light well and cut it into pieces to fit between the timber studs in the light well. then add an extra layer to the outside of the studs to stop cold bridging through the timber. you should also look at your extractor fans have they got a humidity switch? if not the should be replaced with one that has as half your problem is probably ventilation.

Is it a good job and what sort of money was it to get done.

Fantastic job and the house is so much wamer for it too.

Including vent cards...in or around the 20-22 euro a square meter mark,to be spray foamed.

Bio-Foam Open cell 800 for domestic situations.:)

If you are slabbing out (attic conversion) then all that happens is that the surface is cut/shaved smooth with the rafters and then you slab away.:)

We have the entire house internally slabbed out in 50 and 80mm insulated slab.

We also had Rockwool and Knauf insulatin installed in walls and various floor/ceiling voids for sound insulation.

We also had underfloor voids spray foamed too.

"Short term pain for long term gain".........as my mother would say.:)

Ive lost the SD card with the "spray foam in the floor voids" pics.

I,ll find it later on and throw up some pics to show you what the underfloor is like.

    Regards.:)
