well the headgasket has gone on my bangernomics freelander:mad: so i was browsing ddeal last night and came across a few nice looking a4's with the 1.6 and 2.0lt petrol for handy money. i dont want a diesel (satans fuel!) and don't do the mileage to warrant one. i like the audi and bmw and the price paid for the petrols is a lot less then the diseasals. what is the informed opinions on the 1.6/1.8t audi motors? or the bmw 1.6/1.8/ petrols?
no to worried about the sluggish 1.6 as connemara roads are crap! and i have the bike for performance when i need it

Use the right oil in them is the most important thing. Do not skimp on cheaper oils as there's a tendency for them to sludge up. Use only fully synth VAG approved stuff, and change it on a regular basis.

Personally, I'd go for the 1.8T over the 1.6 or 2.0 litre NA engines any day. The 1.8T is a great engine imo.

You're in pretty much the same boat as myself when i was looking to change- dont do the miles for a diesel.

Previously I had a 3 series, but went for an A5 1.8 tfsi in the end.

You'll get some great advice here, but i was told there are some issues/faults with the BMW's from 2008 on with certain models.

I only have the Audi since November and i love it. The downside of an A4 is that they are pretty common. I have not driven an A4 1.6, but have drove the 2.0lt and its lovely.
I think a 1.6lt engine is too small for an A4 tbh.
