Click of Death on External HDD

    :(

I spent yesterday tidying up cables, and sorting out my Raspberry Pi. Now my external HDD, Iomega 500gb, won't read. I can hear it start to spin, then it clicks, slows, and starts again, repeat ad infinitum.

    I'm a sad panda.

    So, 2 questions.

    1) Does anyone have any recommendations? I am using my Pi as a media player, running RaspBMC. I want storage to save movies, music, pictures, etc, and be able to share them over my home network. Cheap and cheerful, best bang for buck, and other such ways of saying I don't want to spend a lot. E-Retail is fine, B&M stores would also be good.

    2) Anyone any ideas of how I can retrieve the information of the Iomega?

open up case ,take out drive, connect to a pc, maybe use power data, from dvd drive,

    OR try freeze trick,seal in a ziplock bag,put in freezer,leave in for 60 minutes,connect to a pc.
it might be a loose data cable to hardisk.
Or try it in a caddy ,3.5inch unit.
theres an option, take out drive, swap pcb from an identical hd,
i dont think this will work, if platter, mechanism is dead.no harm to try it though.
or just buy a new 2 tb hd, pcworld, or maplins.
DO NOT touch the hd pcb circuit board.
you,ll need a few 100 gig space to copy data, you may only get 1 chance ,re freeze trick.see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaedSV0wj4k
    SEE ,
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbq8vfs1wYY

    repair clicking hd,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoVBHG4kajA
it could be a bad pcb.

    see http://www.geoffgolder.com/hard-drive-click-of-death-fix
tap the drive,it may fix it, free up the mechanism.
    try the freeze trick first.
post what model no it is, eg seagate 560hdn,if you need a spare pcb.

It's most likely toast. There's no harm trying the methods above but they don't work most of the time.

Any important files should really be backed up. Anything else can just be downloaded.

Any recommendations for a replacement drive?

    I'm looking at http://cpcireland.farnell.com/intenso/6031511/drive-3-5-usb3-0-3tb-intenso/dp/CS24954?in_merch=New%20Products&MER=e-bb45-00001002

I'm not familiar with Intenso to be honest. I'd assume they are using some other manufacturers drive and they only make the external housing. I can't find details on what actual drive is inside. The price is good though.

I'd stick with a reliable manufacturer like Seagate, Samsung or Western Digital. Something like this.

No matter which drives you buy, buy them in pairs and keep 'em synced. HDDs are cheap enough, so there's no excuse for not having a backup. ;)

There s nothing to lose ,by trying freeze ,or tap, trick,

whether its worth buying an identical pcb, depends on price, and
whether there is valuable data on this drive.
if you post hd model no,someone on boards.ie ,Might have an identical pcb.
    i have at least2 old 500gig hds.
And you can backup to sites like, mega, or gdrive.
if you are buying a 2 or 3tb drive ,buy from an irish company.

Ah, there's nothing hugely important on it, but herself is having a coniption because I backed up all the photos to it. I've always preached the benefits of having backups, I was always more concerned about the PC/Lappy HDD failing, has happened before with a lappy HDD.

    HDD model is MDHD500-UE.

Whats The company, eg seagate , western digital,?

seems you have a SATA drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.10,ST3500830AS
    QUOTE;

I have fried internal HD in IOMEGA MDHD500-UE external HD,and I need to change al.board, PCB on SATA drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.10,ST3500830AS to save the data like familie photos and my question is to what should I pay attention in(SATA) parameters if I want to buy another one compatible from the newer series, because I can not find the same model from IOMEGA or 3,5 SATA drive.
    end quote;

So you might wanna get a identical pcb
    ,swap it in,
SATA drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.10,ST3500830AS ,

There,s no way of gaurantee ,ing that another pcb
    will fix the drive.

every external drive has a hd inside the case,
with a small circuit board ,with 2 cables,
    data,power,
going to a hardisk ,made by seagate, wd , etc

IF you have a pc, you can remove hd from case, connect it to a pc.
    its likely a 3.5inch drive.Sata type.
Iomega makes the case ,and power supply.not the actual hardisk.

    Heres the drive you have,http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Seagate-Barracuda-7200-10-500-GB-Internal-7200-RPM-3-5-ST3500830AS-Hard-Drive-/93788243
its possible to swap around pcbs from 1 drive to another,
if the 2 pcbs are completely Identical.

Gently ,open the case, use a small philips ,screw driver, the power ,data cables ,can just be easily pulled, off the sata drive interface, power, data .
2 ,or 4 screws need to opened ,to remove the hardisk, from the enclosure.

Going to wait until I have the other HDD in my hand before I tackle the case. If I do get it going, I want to be able to transfer it straight away.

    Cheers for the help.

if you do do the freezer trick the key is get your data off as quickly as possible as the actuator will settle back on the platters quickly once it defrosts and you won't be able to get anything off, unless you freeze it again :)

    D'ya know something? **** technology. **** it.

Got me new HDD for the Pi the last Thursday, and it's working fine. Decided I'd try to work on the old HDD today, to see if I could retrieve the stuff of it.

Pulled apart the drive, just to check to see if it was a power issue. Connected it to mobo.

At first drive wasn't recognised. Tried refitting cables, just in case it was loose. Booted into Windows, and drive was recognised. Thought "nice one, stuff saved." Windows froze.

    Reboot.

Now neither HDD can be recognised. The BIOS can't find either. I can hear them spin, but it doesn't beep (I think POST is the term.)

Have tried multiple cables. Have tried both devices. Have tried both devices singularly. At some point each device was found singularly, but when I tried booting back into Windows, "Device not found."

    My head is ****ing tortured!

    Anyone, please, someone, save me.

i think you have better chance, of getting acess to old drive,if you
Use a live cd,eg linux mint,
    see my previous posts.
    eg i understand pc crashing,
eg it may see both drives as boot devices,
eg use live cd, plug in old hd,
    Put newer drive in caddy.
    Cost of caddy 2.5 sata,
    12 euro.
    When installing drive,knock off pc.
    REMOVE POWER cable from, pc.
if you had 2 pcs, get acess to drive, transfer data using ,
usb drive, or pendrive 4gig .

do not use 2 drives on same pc at the same time.
I would not use a pi pc,to acess a old hd,
    THATS not a good idea.
Old DRIVE is not stable enough to install linux on.
Less chance of linux mint crashing ,on old drive.

    WALK before you run,
see can you get live cd to detect old hd,
    acess folders ,files on it.
then theres ways of saving the data,to another,pc,
eg thru network, ethernet, or external caddy.

i have old,hd, it only works in a caddy,
it crashes randomly, in caddy 1,with usb power.
works ok, in caddy 2,sata, with external power attached.
old hd,wont work ,in pc1, with another hd installed in pc1.
eg looks like ,old drive, wont work ok, in windows
I think you,ll have to buy a caddy at some point ,to get your data.
ill post back here Tommorow .
POST is when the bios screen ,displays, pc boots up, whether it detects a hd is another story.
its safer, to boot up,just old drive, boot up from livecd,
    dont attach another drive,
eg old drive could have a hardware fault.

    Cheers riclad.

I wasn't using the Pi to try to connect the drives, was using it on my main PC.

Now the HDD that was in the PC isn't being recognised, never mind the HDD that I took out of the Iomega box (Which, BTW, you were right, it was a Seagate drive). BIOS isn't detecting it, never mind a Live CD. Tried Gparted, tried Windows disk, didn't try LinuxMint as I couldn't find it.

(On another note, nothing is working for me today at all. Got into work, printers are acting the bastard, my actual work is all over the shop because people made some hellish **** ups, my phone is randomly rebooting, I've had oddballs galore, I'm about 3 hours behind, I'm tired, and I'm ****ing about on Boards)

    http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=60,
my advice is get a pc,
    on www.jumbletown.ie free,p4 ,
That old drive needs a sata caddy powered ,with its own psu ,
    25 euro.or see www.adverts.ie free stuff.
when you turn on pc, rest finger on ,drive, top, metal,
    not pcb.
You should be able to feel, drive spin up,after a few seconds.
another pc, use old hd, by ITSELF,

    with lifecd,linux,or gparted.

DO NOT PLUG into pc, with any OTHER DRIVE,other hardrive,
a pc with even cdrom drive will do as a test unit.
    GO TO pc bios,setup,
set fastboot=off, gives bios more time to detect drives.

make sure pc has a sata port before you get it,
or else buy a sata caddy with psu, 25 euro.3.5inch.
    is drive 3.5?

I should have made it clear,
    if installing drive, in pc,
    disconnect ,other hardrive,
even swap in a cdrom drive,if you have one.

Some of them are getting pretty warm alright, but it's OK to leave them on. Check your power settings and set it to turn off the hard diskss after X minutes of inactivity, that should help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

if iomega drive, has power unit, it should be knocked, off,
hen you are not using it,
maybe leave plugged in for 3 hours.
    GO to control panel,power settings,
knock off hd, drive after 10 , 20 minutes.
this just puts drive in lo power mode,
    Not powered off completely.ALWAYS
    use ,icon,system tray,
remove device, remove usb drive, e;. or f;/, or shutdown pc,remove usb cable ,
    When pc is powered down.
    before taking out usb cable,
NEVER POWER off drive, when usb cable is plugged in to
pc,ESPECIALLY When pc is turned on.

If trying to fix hd1 ,
    old 500meg hd,
use pc, with livecd,or linux on usb key,
    WITH no other drive attached,
no hardrive apart from old hd drive.
