Didn't cut last year, now 3m high and not as wide, can I trim now? I am anxious to test my "bargain Lidl telescopic hedge trimmer".

I would hold off cutting till late March, we should be clear of hard frosts by then depending where you are in the country. Privet can be damaged by frost, especially the young growth which is probably starting to appear around now, leaving the hardier (woody) growth by not trimming will help protect the young growth. Watch out for birds nesting before you trim it.
