if I remove the rocker cover on my mk2 punto well I break the seal. I think my oil leak is coming there as there seems to by loads to oil around the area

The gasket/seal is generally rubber and shaped like the outline of the valve cover. It sounds like yours is perished and needs replacing.

If recommend getting a new seal/gasket before taking off the old one and if the engine has a distributor then get an O ring gasket for it too while your at it.

If thats where your leak is, then you need to replace the seal/gasket anyway!

They are usually just a simple cork material and only small money, unless it comes as part of a head gasket set, which will usually include inlet manifold and exhaust manifold gaskets. Thermostat housing gasket, cylinder head gasket etc. etc. Check you local motor factors.

When removing the old gasket ensure that no bits fall inside the rocker assembly. They can block up the oilways! Also, there is most likely a tightening sequence for the cover bolts, usually starting at the centre, then the furthest away at the corners, moving along the sides, top and bottom, also at opposite ends, until you get back to the centre. The idea is to get a good even spread, if you get my drift.
