2nd hand car...no trade in. % Discount on list?

    I've decided to look around for a newish motor and will not be trading in against it.

    What % discount can I expect to negotiate on the advertised price? (I appreciate that depends on the asking in the first place, but give or take.)

    Thinking of buying Passat, Insignia type - 3/4 years old. Dunlin/Kildare/Meath area.

    Anyone offer any indications/advice. No rush on purchase.

    There is no rule. People will ask what they want.
    2 identical cars could have thousands in the difference price wise.

    You need to figure out what the car is worth and take it from there.

    I suppose the pointers I'm looking for are if a dealer has €14,950 as the sticker price, what are they likely to come down to..?

    I appreciate all dealers have different margins/inflated prices - but am I being realistic in expecting €1,000 off that price or €750 or €500 etc.

    The point is that there is no hard and fast rule for this.

    If the car is competitive at that price then you wont get much, however if it is over priced then you could get lots off.

    It would be pure guesswork to answer that question. The dealer might have built in €1000 negotiating room into the asking price, in which case you might get €1000 off. They also might have priced the car low for a quick sale, or it might be a very desirable model, in which case you might not get anything off.

    Best thing to do is chance your arm, be realistic in your offer, and see what they say.

    Forget about the discount and focus on the price.

    some other tips I've heard (I'm looking at buying soon too)
    Do your homework, know what price the car is in general
    don't tell them your full budget
    A good tip I heard was have brouchers from other dealers in your car back seats. Presuming the dealer sees them he'll know you're seious about buying that that you're looking around.
    don't look too eager to buy
    if sales dealer has targets end of month can be better time
    if you're trading in don't tell them. say I don't know. stick to 1 transaction at a time- price he offers you. then ask what can you give me for trade in...
    Mention other cars-e.g. The Honda Civic has this feature, does this car.

    No, I'm not. Ok, I mentioned a bit about 'if you're trading in' but I was thinking of all bits of advice to give, trying to be helpful

    Consider this OP:

    2 identical cars worth €10000 each.

    Car A is advertised at €12000 and dealer will discount that to €11k for cash.

    Car B is advertised for €11000 and dealer will sell it for €10500 cash.

    Car B is the better deal, even though the cash discount is less.

    Never ever tell how much you looking to spend..
    Don't make a straight offer you could fool yourself and pay more than they are going to drop instead insist on the best price for a sale..
    If you have cash make sure you let them know they usually give a slightly better price..
    Don't get to friendly with the sales man they all want to be your best friend and get you relaxed on negotiating price,be firm on what you want

    I was looking for cars last year and most places had the cash price up. Very few dealers are adding in haggle room these days and from reading here a trade in will increase the asking price.
