Someone has my old number?

A person in college wanted my mobile number and I wasn't keen on giving it to them, so I gave them my old phone number of 086*******, thinking that it would just go to voicemail or get an error message or something. I rang it just to make sure myself, and someone answered it on the other end. What's going on?????

And please don't joke by saying there were too many stars, didn't dial.
And it's no one's business why I didn't want to give the number.
And I'm 100% sure it was my number. I have just checked an old address ook of mine and it is written in there.

    Ech... Once again

If a number is not used for a period of 6 months (no top ups and no usage) network will disable it and recycle it.

Yeah, the network own the number and just assign it to you. If you don't top up they'll recycle it eventually.

You haven't used the number in a long time. It depends on the network it was on, but rough timeline deactivate after 6 months, suspended for another 6 months, at which you can reactive anytime, if not then it is put back into the pot and reissued. You don't own the number.
