I want to put this question forward in order to see what the opinion is out there. Car tax is a massive burden see above- I drive an 03 two litre vehicle which costs over seven hundred per year to tax I can't afford over seven hundred in one hit why am I penalised for paying quarterly. Is this a tax on admin if so why do we not have the option of direct debit-the technology is there. Shouldn't we all pay the same?. I am only looking for fairness.

Pasted tables don't do well on boards, OP needs to be reformatted, or just follow this link: https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/menu.do?page=motortaxrates

I found it impossible to extract any info from that whatsoever.

If taxes were fair then they wouldn't be called taxes. :pac:

I think the answer OP is to pay thousands in extra taxes (VAT and VRT) in buying a new car, and save a few hundred every year in annual road tax.

Factor in depreciation and it's actually way sorer than €700p.a.

And an unfair tax are where I'm paying too much or someone else is paying too little.

On the plus side, I bought a 7 year old car for 7.4% of the new price ...

Me neither. Is it like road tax?

That reminds me, I need to pay my motor tax.

That post is unfair to my eyes. Motor tax or licence fund is unfair, however, there is a legal way that you do not have to pay it...

    Where does it say this?

I've heard this argument being made before, but never seem to hear where
the information regarding penalty/incentive comes from.

If that is the case then why are monthly arrears calculated as 1/12th of the yearly rate? Are we also being incentivised for not paying our tax on time?

put 5 cent on per liter of petrol and the more you drive the more you pay in tax and vice versa.it would free up garda to do other things than stopping and checking for road tax .i would also make it easier to own and run a car .

All viable options but never going to happen.

Taxing Irish people who won't make a fuss is like shooting ducks in a barrel.

Shurre if we complained Enda might get abit weepy again

Must be 1/2 dozzen state departments all seeking their pound of flesh from the motorist.
Then every method of maximising revenue is exploited.
Motor tax is most noticeable and penalising for paying quarterly is hitting those with the least means. But not only do irish people take it lying down. We have some who will support anything that their political party will impose or doesn't dirrectly impact them.

So while I agree its wrong I too bend over to get shafted.

Jesus thats scandalous. So its cheaper to pay in arrears than by the book in 3 or 6 month chunks. This has to change surely.

Is that true? So its actually cheaper to pay in 3 x 4 month payments, rather than 4 x 3 month payments? (assuming youre happy to run the risk of going 32+ days with expired tax)

As stated many times before the only fair way of imposing motor tax and ensuring everyone complies is to apply it at the pumps. The government can also save in fiscal terms by making the motor tax department obsolete while also saving gardai resources to more meaningful activities than the policing of motor tax payments and display of a tax disc.

Alternatively since the government are so intent on the saying "those you can pay should pay more" why not impose the motor tax on the value of your motor similar to the proposed introduction of the property tax? Granted it's effectively another form of VAT but an amount that can be extracted annually as opposed to solely on new purchases.

In terms of fairness there's nothing fair about having to pay nearly the value of my 12 year old 1.9l car annually in motor tax and as such the incentive is there to go untaxed like a large proportion of motors on the road.

    Yep.

The rates are interesting, having at last NCT (passed in a second) my 00 reg 1.8T had 132 CO2 level, which should be around €76/ quarter year, but because its registered before 08, I have to pay €179/ quarters... not even mentioning that is it road or air tax then?
Usually they say, because older cars are not that safe, and they don't want them on the road anymore... BS! If it weren't safe then it shouldn't pass the NCT. With upgraded sport suspension and brakes, 1.5 tonnes of German steel, front/side/rear airbags, serviced every 3000 miles, rather keep it, then having a 3 years old rust eaten-beaten Japanese plastic toy car.

    00 1.8T petrol 132g CO2/km? Doubt it.

Aye. Make it ten cents, even. This is the only proper "polluter pays" system, and its absence confirms as far as I am concerned the money-making-scam nature of motor tax.

2000 A4 1.8T ranges from 188 to 199 from what I can see online, which is €750 or €1200 a year in tax depending on which bracket it falls into.

Id also love to know which Japanese cars are rust eaten after 3 years?
