Bottle Cage Bolts

Have a bit of a problem, the cage bolt is loose and rattles around when I cycle, turns out the threads are gone in the bit on the bike, the frame is carbon, can I have it rethreaded or have I any other option. Have the bike 3 years, maybe could use a bigger bolt, but would that be just making things worse in the long term. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Don't know if this would work or not, but it might be worth a try as a cheap, quick and easy fix. Have you tried plumbers tape?? The white stretchy rubbery tape plumbers use in copper joints. I'm guessing it'd be fairly cheap in a hardware shop. Wrap a little bit around the bolt, (I think you wrap it the opposite direction to the thread, so it doesn't unwind when screwing it in) and if there's still enough thread in the bit on the bike, it might hold it firm enough to stop it rattling.

I think its an M5 thread. If the actual receiver is not loose in the carbon, you can either tap out to M6 and use an oversize bolt but you'll have to widen the slot in the cage or you can get an M5 helicoil fitted which will restore it to its origanal thread. If the piece itself is loose you can probably repair it with an epoxy resin type adhesive.

Thanks, had to look up a Helicoil on wiki, where would i go about getting it done, like what kind of specialist, also would putting in something bigger not loosen the fixture, at the minute I have cable tie on it, at least its not rattling at me when I cycle

an easy fix would be to use a pop rivot.

Most motorbike shops have helicoil kits, but maybe not as small as M5.
You could buy a Kit in somewhere like Scott Tools in Killarney.
I wouldn't go the pop rivet route to be honest.
