Question about shifters and my requirments

    Hi,

I'm looking to get a new bike on the BTW scheme. I had a Specialized Allez until it got knicked before Xmas. It was entry level with Tiagra gears,
which I hear are bottom of the range. So now I'm looking to get a new bike and am wondering what I should be looking at in terms of frames and shifter sets.

    A little more info:
I intend to do duatholns (have done a few before)
I will also use this bike to cycle to work etc.
I don't have a lot of spare time to cycle etc so will prob only train/cycle once a week or so and probably not more than 50k at a time.

I would like a Focus/Felt or Specialized but want to know what I should be looking out for in terms of what would suit me.

Any info or pointer would be great. Also, if you need any more info just let me know.

tiagra are not bottom of the line. 2300 are bottom of the line, then there's sora and then tiagra. Above tiagra is 105, ultegra and then dura ace.

Also, up until last year tiagra was 9 speed, now it's 10. Similarly I think they've redesigned the sora lever so new sora is better than old which further confuses things.

Regardless of what you end up with, shifters won't win races for you.

And then there is also Campag and SRAM to choose from. Just make sure you are comfy with the hoods and reach to the levers and that you can shift up and down easily from the drops.

OK, I was lookin at this. It's got Sora on it, guy in the shop said they were a decent set for what I need.
Please the frame is supposed to be very decent and if I need to in the future I can just get a better set in a year or so.

    Opinions?

It's a nice looking bike but I wouldn't buy it if you think you are going to upgrade it. Chances are you'll want a carbon frame / new bike in a year or so and the cost of the upgrade for new shifters won't be as cheap as what you think. That bike is 9 speed and most group sets are 10 speed now. So you'll need to factor in new rear cassette and derailleur too ( not sure about the cranks with a narrower chain and all the hassle that brings...

That said, I got a basic Allez a coulpe of years ago and it's been a great bike for me. Only just getting a new bike now and I'll probably still keep the Allez for winter / training.

I prob wont ever want Carbon tbh as I don't really see myself lookin after a bike that much.
It's really just to get to work, go out for 50k at weekends and then do smallish Duathlons.

Any other suggestion for a bike within that price range?

    This for a similar price:

or this for a similar spec, just a bit cheaper( if they get it back in stock):

    This seems good value too:

Can you shop online? If you can, you should go for the canyon roadlite:

    Tks.

it's bike to work so can't shop online. Also, Eurocycles are not part of Bike to Work they use Cycle2work which is different and
my company only do Bike To work.

In that case it will be grand. I wouldn't even worry about thinking to upgrade - The Sora will be fine for a good few years. A few people don't like the thumb buttons but I spend most of my time on the hoods anyway so they're fine for me.

Any opinions on this? It's got 105s but is that just on the front?

Sorry, I really dont know anything about group sets or bikes in general.

"Micro.shift integrated shifters & front derailleur, Shimano 105 rear derailleur, FSA Vero Compact 50/34T crankset, SunRace chain & 11-25T cassette"

Carbon bikes don't any more maintenance than any other frame material.

It's a Felt, I think their second cheapest bike. http://www.wheelworx.ie/bikes/road-bikes/road-bikes-men?product_id=3667
    I've been told to avoid.

    I think I'm kinda locked into this.http://www.cycleways.com/store/product/64315/Specialized-Allez-Sport-Black/
It seem to be right for me. Will just try the feel of the breaks/gears and them make a decision.

There is also this: http://www.wheelworx.ie/Mares-AX30?keyword=Focus Which I really like.
