I am having only limited success trying to set-up a DNLA operation and was wondering could any member advise me. My Panny tv ( TX-L47 DT) and my 720 Bluray recorder can see each other in the DNLA abilities of both. Each can also see my Buffalo nas drive and I can play files on the nas drive on either the recorder or the tv.But I cannot get the nas drive to see either tv or recorder. What I want to do is transfer some files from the hhd of the recorder to the nas drive. Do I need some extra software? any advice gratefully received. I can see all three devices on my laptop. For starters, are you able to play the recordings using Windows Media Player ? The "720" should appear in "other libraries".
BTW, the Panasonic machine must be switched on, not in standby.
You won't be able to copy recordings using WMP so will need something like VLC Player or XBMC to copy.
But first step is to see if you can play them in WMP.

You won't be able to copy them across windows explorer like normal files, needs to be done through a media player as suggested above.

Bridster,Thanks for the suggestions.Yes ,I know the 720 has to be switched on and I can see and play the files on Windows media player on my laptop. But I really want to transfer the files from the 720 to my Nas drive and all attempts failed .I also have VLC and Realplayer Pro on my pc and can easly send downloaded files from laptop to nas. Would I need different software to enable me to transfer from 720 to nas drive? Any suggestions greatly received.TMULL

You can't use WMP to copy the files.
    I Use XBMC
    http://xbmc.org/download/

VLC player is also reported to work but I could get no sucess with it but didn't spend too long trying as XBMC is a much nicer interface.

See my post #87 here for setting up copying via XBMC.
Doesn't take too long to set up.

BTW, if you have Windows 8 on your pc, some users are now reporting that they can see and copy the files direct from windows explorer. I don't have it myself.

Thanks again.I failed the last time that you advised me.That software just kept freezing on me but I shall try again this evening.I have windows 7 and am happy enough with it.I appreciate you taking the time to help.I shall play around for a few days and let you know how I get on.TMULL

Bridster, revisited your post 87 as recommended and reloaded the xbmx software.Navigating through that is going to be a steep learning curve.Trying to play around with it I managed to get the freeze-up I experienced previously and found I could not get out of the site.I had to power down the laptop and start it up again. I then searched the web for guidance and discovered that most experienced users navigate using the keyboard and I then discovered that in playing around trying to learn its features that I had inadvertently turned off my mouse function on the laptop. Now I know what happened to me om my previous attempt. This morning I followed your instructions and managed at different times to see the files on my 720 and then on my nas drive.I dont know how but have found a section of the AVforum that offers help so I shall spend the next few weeks learning as much as I can and let you know.As you are the only member that offered help may I express my deep appreciation to you.I am now making progress.TMULL

Update,I can now see both my 720 and nas files and play them on the xbmc page. Still learning to navigate around this site.Nearly all the sites I have checked out seems to be for the more experienced users. However I can now watch a film library on this site and am still learning features about it. Still cannot shift files from one site to another.TMULL

Did you manage to navigate to System File Manager ? It's a way bit tricky to find the first time.

Scroll across with your mouse on right side of screen about half way down, and scroll past Videos,Music,Programs,System
When you see System, below it are 4 tabs, one of which is called File Manager. Click on that.
Once in there the screen splits in 2, left side A is your source (e.g. the Panasonic) and right side B is the location on your PC or NAS you want to copy to.

Bridster,Yes I have managed that but try as I might I cannot get to the next step,ie transferring the files.I am gradually getting around the problems and have access to sites such as Youtube,Dailymotion and a few free film sites. It is a great piece of software and I appreachate you pointing it out to me. TMULL

Bridster,I had been trying to set-up my DNLA certified recorders and Nas drive for months and asked on a few forums for guidance but you were the only one to offer help.Your guide has been the key to me achieving what I wanted to do,ie transfer files from my Panasonic 720 recorder to my new nas drive.I know as much about nas drives as I do about space exploration. That is sweet FA, but I now can do what I want in the file transferring area. Thanks for your great help.
