Gardaí are announcing a new system to register bicycle serial numbers in Cork in order to combat theft:

Not many details are given, and I fail to see exactly what they're planning. Is there anything similar done elsewhere in Ireland?

(It's also very nice that, as the article mentions, bicycle stands are being installed in many new locations, and not only in purely city centre locations as it was the case until now. That's a really useful addition in more suburban areas, where it can be hard even to find a pole to attach to.)

This is nothing new, I remember when I got my first bike in the mid eigties the first thing my father told me to do was to go down a register my serial number with the local guards.

They probably just wrote on a scrap piece of paper and duely lost it, but still, it was done back then

Well I'd say that's a big difference with what they could do now (if I knew what this was). And I've never tried to ask the guards to register any bike, but I'm pretty sure I would face bewidlerment if I tried...
