    Hi,

I am thinking of taking up muay thai soon and I realise that quite a bit of kit is needed such as gloves, gum shield, groin guard etc. My question is how much would I need to spend on equipment to get started. Any and all responses appreciated. Thanks in advance:)

where are you gonna start training, and do they have a shop already, normally youd only need handwraps and gloves to get you started.

As Paddy said, handwraps is all that you 'need', a lot of places would have gloves that you can use while you decide if its for you or not. A groin guard is a smart purchase but not essential.

So to answer your question. About a fiver.

I haven't bought a pair of gloves over here yet as the ones in the club are in the best of condition. However, some clubs are better than others; the communal gloves might be the most horrific yokes ever so investing in a decent leather pair then would be in your interest.

I would buy gloves soon enough after starting anyway. The stink off your hands from your own gloves is bad enough. Its pretty manky when 10s of other people have used the gloves before you.

We have most of the stuff you'll need in our shop... handwraps and a gumshield will set you back a tenner. We have gloves, shin insteps and groin guards too if you want them.

    Hi Paddy and everyone else,

Thanks for the quick response. The closest club to me is is Dublin Thai Boxing and I have heard nothing but good things about the club so I'll be starting there. If all I need to start are gloves and hand wraps money shouldn't be a big deal, and if muay thai is for me i'll buy what I need as I go along (probably starting with a groin guard!). I'll have a look around at siam boxing supplies and defendu (cheers Alan and Maeve) to see what prices are like. I think my best bet is to wait and talk to someone in Dublin thai boxing about glove weights, brands and the like. Anyway, thanks everyone you have been a big help!
