Timing belt is 160,00km on Fords, so it should be OK if the mileage is genuine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

I'd consider it expensive because its a saloon focus, petrol and 7 years old

So what kind of offer would you make as I do like the high spec?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

When you say 'market valuation' where did you get that figure?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,989 ✭✭✭kravmaga

The valuation is provided by Motor Trade Publishers, the official source for second hand vehicle prices in Ireland.

I ordered a History and Valuation check on the registration number.

That's the info I got back.

    Why you want to know?

What would you offer the dealer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Reason I'm asking is I'd much rather have a focus like that with the ti vct engine and all the gear than most of the focuss out there.
A1.4 LX saloon is worth considerably less, and whilst everyone says extras are dead money, if you're actually looking for those extras and can't find many other focuss for the asking price, do you just not buy the car because other people don't value them as much as you?

We brought in an 08 i30 in from the UK last year with the same sort of extras as are on that focus, we could have had a more basic model 09 for the same money but placed more value in the spec than the year.

If you're happy with the car and the warranty etc, I'd offer around 5600 for it and see what happens, I don't think its crazy expensive. Sure you can get 07s and diesels for the same price but this is not a private sale, car has good spec and is a good colour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,989 ✭✭✭kravmaga

Cheers Colm, yes I think thats a fair offer.

Its a nice colour, high spec etc.

Going to have a look at it tomorrow.

    Thanks for the feedback

5600 me arse, good for a seller, offer 5 and pay mo more than 5200

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,989 ✭✭✭kravmaga

They may just offer a 3 month warranty, wont know until I check it out tomorrow.

Based on the fact that they're asking 5950 and you therefore expect to get it for €5200, or something else?

Based on the fact that 10% off an advertised asking price is pretty much accepted as a given

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Thought that's what you meant alright.

So if he can't get it for €5200 then walk away?

Can you find something similar in a focus ghia for that money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,989 ✭✭✭kravmaga

I will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

Thanks for all the inputs guys

Well if hes in between 5200 and 10% off asking price then hes in the right place for dealing.

To say walk in and offer 5600 I think is a bit unfair to the dude.

If they had been asking €6450 for the car, what percentage would you be knocking off the price?

That would depend what the car was worth.

Answer me this, If I have a car worth 6450 and I walk into a dealer asking him to buy it, what would I be offered?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That would depend what the car was worth.

This is where the 10% rule falls down.

On the contrary, if a dealer has a car marked up for 6450, you can bet your ass his markup is anything from 25% to 50%, so 10% would mean hes making 15% to 40% - would you agree?

No. Unless you know what the dealer bought it for or what the car is generally worth in the trade, what work has been done on it etc, you won't know,

If the dealer got really lucky and bought a car for €3000 when generally they'd cost €4500, does that mean they have to sell it for less?

I'm not talking about this car specifically, but the asking price isn't the right thing to base a cars value on. Even if you get 10% off, it doesn't mean you're getting a good or bad deal. A lot of dealers will price a car to sell.
By all means go in low, but if the dealer doesn't give the discount you expect it doesn't mean you're getting a bad deal.

I don't know what that dealer paid for the focus, I'm assuming you don't either. I do know that the dealer is making a profit, and as a buyer you have to get the best deal, but saying to walk away from a deal just because you don't get a certain percentage off isn't really good advice.

+1 on the above..... bar the colour. Silver is distinctly .........Meh.:D

Otoh, the extras on that would swing it for me: particularly the leather. When you're buying used, you don't get to pick the colour so much, so if you get a car you like, and it ticks 90% of the boxes, then that's a Win, to me.

I'd be placing more emphasis on spec these days too. And given the paucity of such spec on cars, then arguing over 5200/5600 and comparing to a more common spec is moot: you wouldn't get set of good leather seat covers for the difference...........

    OP here. Heads up.

Well its too late, it was sold on Thursday apparently .

Rang the dealer this morning who confirmed it.

I was too slow off the mark for the 2006 so going to have a look at a 2008 Focus GHIA spec tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

    That leather looks rank IMHO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

OP maybe look out for a 1.6 s40 with leather. A lot out there are 1.8 petrol. They're largely the same car as the focus, the engine isn't as powerful and they're a bit less sharp to drive but the interior is lovely and they are a bit more posh than a ford.

Based on the fact that 10% off an advertised asking price is pretty much accepted as a given

It depends totally on how attractively it's priced.

If you were lucky enough to find a great car, in great condition, and priced attractively chances are there'd be a few "live" enquiries on it.

If that's the case you'll never get 10% off.

What's worse is that refusing to accept that might let an excellent car be bought by someone else, who does.

No good advice, but still better than starting negotiations at 300 less than asking price.

I prefer to stay with the Ford Focus GHIA as I already have one.

Going to have a look at a 2008 Ford Focus GHIA 1.6 Saloon tomorrow.

NCT is out since Dec 2012 and road tax.
Rang dealer, offering a 12 month warranty, fully serviced and valet.

Still seems a bit pricey at E8,450, its a 1.6 so will have to take into account running costs as I dont foresee petrol getting any cheaper in the future.

I asked about timing belt as over 113km on the clock. Due at 150km

Seems the vehicle has been on the forecourt for a few months.

    Any comments/ feedback?

It is compared to your average used Focus or similar class car out there.

Gentlemen I am aware of the spec on the motor, its the price I want advice on.

I like silver otherwise I would not be interested.

So that said please feedback comments on the asking price of €8,450.

Yeah i know you have issues with the colour silver, GHIA is one of the highest spec on a Focus.

I like the cloth seats as I currently have leather.

Whats your feedback on price dude?

Yes not bad for a 2007, but its the Focus 2008 that I am looking at now, see link I have pasted from carsireland.ie.

I have a trade in so I will not be paying a total cash price.

The 2006 Focus was sold last Thursday.

1 previous owner, I ran a check on the vehicle today.

Tax is out of date and so the NCT is out for past 60 days.

What u think on asking price?

Wont know until dealer views my trade in on Friday, as its the earliest I can get to them in Blackrock.

See what he offers me but I would not be offering the asking price of €8,450.
