    3.40 Sedgefield

    Umadachar 5/1

Warren Greatrex makes the rare 500+ mile round trip up to Sedgefield with a couple of runners today which should both go very close to winning but the one I think represents excellent value at 5/1 is his 5 year old mare Umadachar who makes her handicap debut over hurdles off a mark of 114 which I think she looks to have been given a pretty lenient opening mark by the handicapper. Making her debut a little over a year ago, Umadachar developed into a really useful horse in bumpers winning at Folkestone on her 2nd start before placing in two large field Listed Bumpers in March and April of last year before taking the summer off to presumably strengthen up. On the back of 7 month absence, Umadachar was a little disappointing on her hurdling debut when beaten 20L over 2m at Towcester back in November but she clearly benefited greatly from the run, the experience and the step up to an extended 2m6f when scoring 12 days later. Held up in the rear of the field by Noel Fehily, Umadachar had to be niggled at various stages of the contest and had to be driven by Noel Fehily heading around the home turn but despite hanging left a bit she asserted late on to score by 0.75L with the front two drawing well clear of the remainder. The form of that race is difficult to decipher as the runner up Floral Spinner has finished runner up to two useful types on her only subsequent starts but I think it will turn out to be pretty useful form in due course. Umadachar's only subsequent start came at the end of December over 2m4f at Fontwell when a well supported favourite but she finished more than 30L behind the front two in finishing 3rd and I am sure this wasn't her true running. In very heavy ground that saw half the field pulled up, Dougie Costello never looked happy on her from an early stage and I'd be inclined to put a line through that effort.

Strictly on her hurdles win to date, 114 seems about right as to what she has achieved over timber but I think there is an awful lot more to come from this 5 year old based on her excellent bumper form. Given that she looks like she races a bit lazily at times, I'm very happy to see first time cheekpieces applied for this Mares Handicap Hurdle and if they help her concentrate and stay interested at her job at hand then I think they could bring out significant improvement from her. A P McCoy, who has a fantastic 7-12 record when teaming up with Greatrex, takes the ride and his booking clearly signifies that connections are expecting a very big run. Moreover, Umadachar seems exactly the sort of horse who would excel under a McCoy drive and I think the pair will make a very formidable partnership. With regards to tomorrows contest, I would be lying if I said I would have greatly preferred if the trip was a little bit longer than 2m4f but I can't imagine her trainer bringing her on such a long journey if he felt she wouldn't handle it. Of the opposition, the couple of recent winners Vinetta and Sparkling Hand should run well but the latter is turned out under a penalty after scoring 10 days ago whilst the latter should face competition for the lead after having an easy enough time of things when scoring over C+D last month and I think Umadachar's unexposed nature could see her improve past them. The other fascinating runner in the field is Donald McCain's fellow handicap debutant My Flora who has some very strong Hunter Chase form in the book but she hasn't looked at home over hurdles to date so I couldn't have her. Warren Greatrex has hit top form in the past week with 3 winners and he boasts a 1-2 record at the track which represents a long travel for the Lambourn trainer. With ground conditions to suit, if the cheekpieces perk up Umadachar I'm confident that McCoy can get an excellent tune out of her and hopefully can steer her to a 2nd success over hurdles.

Sea jewel sister to first lieutenant in the first at clonmel 16-1 looks interesting and blacklough looks a huge ew price 25-1 in the second will definitely suit the longer trip. ew double for me:D

Like the look of Star of Aragorn. Tracey Shuffle isn't a horse I particularly like ever sine she was beaten at odds on one day at Lingfield. Star of Aragorn ran a really good race in a good Market Rasen handicap when beaten just over a length by Local Hero and ran really well in the Greatwood. 7/2 is an okay price

At Clonmel I think Narima looks a good bet in the second last. Terrible beginners chase, she had some decent form over hurdles, finishing three lengths off Plan A in a maiden then beating Prior's Gold (rated 125) and ran well in a couple of competitive handicap hurdles rated in the low 1 teens. She wasn't given an unduly hard time of it first time out over fences in a much better race than this (winner won a handicap off 121,runner up rated 128, third won since). Should be better with that experience behind her and her hurdle rating would put her right in the mix with the market principles.

Very simply J J Lambe has 3 horses crossing the water to AYR. Great record there
Forget about the first one, the last 2 look the picks

James Lambe is a good trainer to follow when he goes over the water. Won 4 races with our mare and got placed in a listed race. Good at placing horses but he tends to have patches where it's best too avoid backing them, not know though he's in good form.

She's in foal to Court Cave. I'm only really after getting into the horses in the last few years, We have 8 mares in foal this year the first one foaled there the other day. He's bred some good horses, the likes of Treacle, Green Belt Flyer, Lucky Bay and a few more winners.

Nice and will ye try to sell all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

Sell most, we have a nice big 3 year old filly by Robin Des Champs that I think he's going to send racing.

A half sister to Snake Eyes who's in foal to Beneficent, thought Snake Eyes was going to be class.

And a half sister to Mikael D'haguenet in foal to Stowaway. That explains a bit of my love for Mikael D'haguenet.

You didn't mention before having Mikael's half sister in foal to Yeats did you

2 horses stand out for me in clonmel, the only problem is they're both in the same bloody race, the 1st at Clonmel.
2 bits of serious bumper form coming into this race.

Im choosing Dawerann, who was third behind Le Vent D'antan at Leopardstown.

There's another horse in the race, Hilltop Tommy who finished third to Union Dues and Champagne James in a Grade 2 at Navan.

The winners of both races are well fancied for the Cheltenham bumper.

I think maybe I did, she was in foal to Yeats when he bought her and he didn't sell. It's a filly, 2 now.

Dawerann was given what i'd call a tender ride ;)
One to keep an eye on me thinks.

I wouldnt say that as such, because there was dribs and drabs of money around, but Heskin took it handy enough alright.
It could have finished closer is what i'd say.

Like Miradane at 6/1 in the next Clonmel.

Not backing it though. I'm having a very successful day, went to the bookies to back Bell Weir in the first and Mullins horse in the 2nd but forgot my wallet. Feels better than backing a winner.

Needed every ounce of McCoy's experience to get her home. Top ride from the champ and makes up for a disappointing day yesterday.

Was going alright from the front then made a bad mistake at one lost it's place rapidly and pulled up might have injured itself whatever way it landed the other side of the hurdle, take it he won't be Cheltenham bound now.

She wasn't great at the last but even with that she should have beat Rathlin getting weight

Jesus shocking start for Mullins as Barry Connell's Jockey no sign of a winner, some money he's blowing all the same on these horses deserves a change of luck,Wouldnt have backed Rathlin in a month of sundays cleaned me out in a maiden hurdle on the same course a while back, bad few days for the money buyers :pac:
