Got a call from a relation who was showing heavy Bullocks in Elphin today. Was a great trade there....standard of cattle would be very high, mainly Charolais/Limousin.He avg over 1000 euro with the weight for cattle he sold, heavy bullocks over 750 kg were making up to 1900 euro.Bullocks fit to kill with another 2 months feeding were selling very well which shows people have faith that the trade will pick up more in months to come.Plenty of buyers around the ring he said.

That's good news, are cattle prices really that far behind last years, another thread on here called what caused the cattle price bubble last year,i was thinkin to myself has the bubble really burst, or just deflated a bit?

I think(and hope) if theres decent growth over the next while, this springs cattle trade wil match last years.

We sold 15 store bullocks in Ros mart last year, from 950 to 1250 with the weight, will be off again in about 3 weeks.
    So fingers crossed.

heard that one of the big factory groups are buying cattle like hell at the moment. need fully traceable stock and need secure supplies for later in the year, seem worried about the amount of finished stock coming on for next couple of months.also factories are trying to convince us that they dont want bulls at any price to try and stop the price of them going up. when beef gets scarce we will see if they want bulls.with the shipping going now their supply of fr bulls looks a bit less certain.the years we made money out of cattle was when live shipping was in place because it curtailed numbers going to factories

I hope you're right. I was looking at the journal last night and I thought it a bit strange. Ships being filled again, general scarcity of beef and factories saying they don't want bull beef. What's that about? Is it the consumer's swing away from mince meat, I wonder?

Heavy heifers in Mohill yesterday were waaaay up too. 3 year old 650kg to 750kg heifers ready for slaughter making €1450 to €1650. Hopefully it will put a bit of confidence back into the trade for stores for grass in the coming weeks!

According to the Journal a lot of it is being pushed by Larry G. Thought to myself last night "he must be trying to make amends and reward farmers for his failings". Then I laughed at myself for an hour. He obviously has a motive!

Live trade is sluggish, numbers are back which is unusual as allot of cattle have already passed through the marts. For the first 6 weeks of a new year usually nothing happens.
The factories declining bulls has been long enough signaled so guys can't feel that hard done by. They are just hard sold as a end produce. Young bulls under 380kgs is whats demanded as has being the case in the UK for a good few years.
The elephant in the room mart wise is credit and there are many cattle buyers unable to conduct business because of this. Probably going to be very noticable in the weanling trade and credit the exporters expect is no longer going to be available. Has the horse already bolted? in this regard - I think so, Lots have left serious dogs lying in the marts. backend prices will be back I would think with the major reduction in the feed costs for next winter. Interesting times:D.

What sort of money were 450-500 kg stores making.

What sort of money were 450-500 kg stores making.

Around 1300e,one man had top cattle around 600kg making 1600e

its not enough, considering a good weaning back last autumn was making 1100e
