My mom is looking to get a year old car. City driving and an occasional couple of hours on (UK) motorways. She likes the Corsa after she ended up with one as a rental but now like the Polo to.

    So which one?

Both good choices in their category,iv drove a 2010 corsa seemed a cracking car,the polo will hold its value a bit better.

Don't know anything about the polo, but i have a corsa for the last 2 years good car never had any problems with it
A nice car for city driving but a bit underpowered on motorway

I've been driving a polo for the past 5 years.

No problems with it at all. I've been doing a fair bit of motorway driving of late & no problems there.

Looking to change at the moment & it seems to have held its value pretty well too. It will cost a bit more than a corsa - but for me anyway, it was money well spent

    Had both as rentals.

    I'd take the Polo

I'm going to throw a spanner in the works, Skoda Fabia. Based on the Polo and generally cheaper. However the value will go down faster.

    This too shall pass.

Corsa is a bit old hat now imo, it's been around since 2006. Polo is grand but they tend to be basic enough and cost alot to buy.

How about a Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20 or Suzuki Swift?

Not sure what petrol Corsa Cs are like, but I drove the 1.3 diesel, and it was absolutely terrible to drive. I suspect the petrol models aren't so bad as they should be a lot smoother as well as having a better sound and better throttle response. However, the Corsa has totally numb steering so I doubt that I would like it even if it was a petrol. In every other aspect it seemed like a good car, with solid feeling plastics, good safety features and very comfortable seats.

    Thanks for all the replies.

She is dead set on Corsa or Polo though!

Polo then. Will hold its value better and in general a better buy

Both are grand cars but hate the hand-brake on the Corsa, the car always seems to slip backwards on a hill unless the brake is fully engaged and they seem to go through headlights like piddle through a snowball. Can't think of any other problems though. My vote goes to the Polo, smashing drive.

Have you considered a Mazda 2, I drove one the other day and was hugely impressed with it for a supermini. Should end up being more reliable than either the Polo or the Corsa too.

If soley given those choices I'd pick the polo. If I was looking for a small but nippy enough car I'd pick a 1.25 fiesta.

So she is test driving a Mazda 2 tomorrow. Thoughts?

Great car. Great ride and handling. Economical and reliable. Good looking. What more could you ask for?

My mother has one and I drive it a fair bit.

I'd have it over a Polo and definitely a Corsa, any day of the week!

Mazda 2 is a real supermini. Zippy, a hoot to drive, really economical and realiable (its a Mazda afterall). Had one on hire a few years back and loved it. Well equipped too. I'm sure they have a decent safety rating as well. Great choice.
