Renewing Drivers License

    Hi All,

Couple of questions Re Drivers License, I wonder if anyone can help me with.

I recently changed home address and I see that to update my License with my new address is free. However, my License is up in November 2013 anyway. Just wondering if I would be eligible to change my licence now and pay the 55 euro to have a new 10 year license with the new address?

Don’t really want to update my license now and then have to do it in November anyway. Loads of hassle with forms etc.

I know i could hang on until November but just seeing if this is possible now.

    Cheers for the help.

They won't renew the licence until you are in the last month.

So if do you the free address change now, you will have to renew again in November.

The way the waiting times are going you'll be lucky to get it by November if you applied now

To change the address do they edit the existing license or give you a new one up to the existing expiry date ?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 69 ✭✭JackieBurke

They issue a new card valid to the old expiry date.

So if a change of address is free, is this a snakey way to get a free credit card style license ?

I think it was an unintended consequence of changing the system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭WetDaddy

I've recently been in touch with them and they have confirmed that a change of address is a free licence renewal *and* that if I send in my paper one I will get the new standard credit card style licence as my replacement.

I sent it (normal full driving licence form, proof of address, 2 x signed photos) in on Monday, so I'll let you guys know how long it takes to get it back.

Cheers wetdaddy, did you have to go the cops to get anything signed?

No problem. No, that's only in the instance that the licence is damaged to a point where it's unreadable / unnacceptable or else you want it officially declared as lost / stolen. I was submitting my actual licence with my application, so there was no need for the Garda stamp.

At least that's according to the form notes, anyway. I'm now living in perpetual fear that my application will be returned in 3 weeks time saying that I forgot to include a sheet of fabric softener or something equally ridiculous.

Heh that reminds me what I encountered few years back.
I was swapping my licence for purpose to update address, and add categories which I was entitles to (W and M).
On the form there was question which I wasn't sure about the answer, so I asked a person in motor tax office, and I was told it didn't apply to me, and she will make a note on it - no answer needed. She told me that my new licence will arrive within 10 day.
    I waited 10 days. 15, 20 and nothing.
I rang them and person who I was speaking to was very surprised that someone told me it was 10 days, as it takes 10 weeks now because of the backlog.
After 11 weeks I received envelope from motortax office, which I was sure was a licence - but no.
It was a form I was filling with indicated that I didn't answer that question.
I hop on the car and drove to motor tax office, where I had to expalain the situation, then she gave me my licence on the spot there and then.
Address was update, but additional categories were not added. When I asked why I was told they forgot, but it didn't matter as I still could drive a tractor (W) even without it being indicated on my licence, and that I couldn't get M category as I didn't fulfil conditions - while in fact I did.

I can understand why. Most forms (including the driving licence application form) will insist that black ballpoint is used. It makes scanning the form easier as blue ink can look 'faded' and therefore difficult to scan/read.

I sent mine off about 3-4 weeks ago & still waiting, thought it must have been lost in the post but reading here makes me think I could be waiting quite a few more weeks.

    Yes, 100%.
I did it to avail of the new licence. Got it in my parents address. I drive a different car every day so it's really handy to have it In the he wallet.

I may change address again before the permanent switch over in September to get it back into my address.

I got mine within 11 working days in Dublin. Throw a call in on Monday to confirm receipt of your application I would.

    Might do so.

I'm in Dublin too & when I rang up the lady said it usually takes around 10 working days.

It's gotten busier in the last month or so, at least in Dublin anyway. I sent mine in on the 18th of Feb. On Wed last (6th Mar.), I received my proof of address documents and my receipt of application in the post. On the phone, they said I should expect it mid-March.

Anyone else have a long wait between receiving their receipt and actually getting he licence?

I haven't even got a receipt of application.

Are you renewing or first time license?

You don't need to lodge anything with a change of address other than your current licence.

You won't get a receipt for a postal application.

    Where did you apply?

    Dublin Motor Tax Office.

Yeah, it was a postal application I sent in.

Either the Ballymun or Clondalkin offices.

I beg to differ; I had to provide my current licence *and* proof of my new address. I confirmed this requirement by getting in touch with the Motor Tax office prior to sending in my application.

My paper licence is worn and in tatters and I need to replace it as it is practically unreadable now. Does anyone know if this is a free replacement until the current expiry or I have to apply for a new ten year licence, there is still 5 years left on it.

Had a vision that you took a sharpie market to your licenses to hide some information then had a sudden DOH! moment :-)

Strange. There's no requirement to proove change of address in Dublin. That's inside knowledge for you ;)
I have never issued, or received a receipt for a drivers licence renewal or replacement that was received in Dublin.

You have to pay €55 for a replacement licence and you only get the remaining time that's left on your current licence AFAIK.

Otherwise, apply for a change of address and its free ;)

An insider! Get him! Or her! j/k :)

I applied to Blackhall place in Dublin City Centre. I was e-mailing with a lady in the Motor Tax office who *wasn't* in that office though, so perhaps she was outside Dublin and told me

If there's no requirement for that in Dublin, does that not mean everyone could avail of this loop-hole? Lots of addresses in Dublin could easily sacrifice / add an extra line to the address with little to no damage, e.g.

    14 Whatever Court
    Something Road
    Town Name
    Dublin

    Could be replaced with

    14 Whatever Court
    Town Name
    Dublin

And I'm sure letters etc. would all still get there. Technically, it would still be a change of address (or you could swap those two addresses around), I'd say...?

    Just thinking out loud!

I rang up today to check.

Mine is in the system, just still about 2 weeks away.

Interested to physically see the new license.

Overall its a good idea & will be handy to have I'D in the wallet for the odd time its still required. Conversely it could also be a pain then if you do happen to lose your wallet on a night out, just another thing to cancel/renew.

No that cant be done. Its the same address.
You would need to swap to your parents house or similar.

I didn't realise my license expired a few days ago so will apply soon. As I have to send in my current driving license with the application form and reading horror stories about the waiting times, what happens if I get stopped by the Garda without a license on me?!

Some people asking how they applied for the license, how many ways are there? Can you drop the application into the office directly?

Yes. You'll also get a receipt with a personal application.

i had to renew recently and am wondering if i completed the form correctly or the license is missing a category...

I have a "standard" licence and got my new one in the post. While checking the categories I wasnt sure if I should have category W (Work vehicles and land tractors). Its not on the license but I also forgot to copy my application so unsure if I made a mistake there...

    Thanks
    W.

I'd just say that I've sent my application in & am waiting for my new license.

If you're really worried about it, copy your old license before you send it off & keep a copy in the glove box.

FYI - I received mine today in the post. One month and one day after they received it (I know since I had someone drop it in in person on the 19th of Feb.). Have to say I'm very impressed; looks professional and *finally* fits properly in my wallet. Very happy to finally have both a license and ID with me that doesn't look like my 3+1/2 year old made it in Montessori.
