Raleigh Nightlfight or Giant Seek

Flat-bar commuters won't get much love from the racing set here but both of these bikes should make a fine work bike.

Out of the box the Raleigh seems like the best bet. No gimmicks and all the essentials. Finding one with a Brooks saddle is even nicer. The new ones come with disc brakes but no carbon fork but if you like the rim brakes and are willing to do a little regular maintenance (or pay for it) this could be perfect.

The Giant is nice too and the one in the photo has the cool belt system but they still seem to be having some teething problems, with the newer centre-track versions of the drive being easier to live with. Unless you can find the Giant with all the "extras" like mudguards, rack, lights etc then remember that they'll push the price up quite a bit.

They both take decent size tyres for comfort (even more important on an all aluminium frame) and look generally pretty sturdy but if buying second-hand make sure it fits you. You can change a few bits to improve the fit but if it's really the wrong size it'll be hard to feel happy on it even for short journeys.

If it were my money I'd go for the Raleigh, it's ready to ride, though you might find an old steel Dawes Galaxy for less, that could be nice too :)
Best of luck with it and post pics!

thanks for the response. i agree the raleigh looks more complete in terms of spec and add ons etc; the giant looks sweet but practicality is the name of the game on this purchase so i think i will go with the raleigh. my last raleigh was a bmx some 30 years ago..
