Hi all . I'm selling my MTb . I only have it a month an I'm upgrading to a road bike . I took a spin on a road bike yesterday an loved it . So I'm looking to pick up something for around the 450-500 mark . Any ideas ? I was looking at the carerra tdf in Halfords and it looks a good bike for the money

you'd pick up a much better deal if you went second hand....here or adverts, you should be able to get better components

Yeah, you're better off asking in the adverts sub forum, you'll get a much better bike for the money.

This is better: The Decathlon Triban 3: link but they are out of stock at the moment :-(

Loads of positive reviews on this in here - do a search for details

If you can't wait, the TDF is a good starter bike. A reasonable alternative would be to go secondhand. Have a look at adverts.ie, donedeal, etc.

Yea it should. It wont fit in their lockers, but they still deliver to main depots such as finglas etc, for collection.

Definitely go second hand for your first bike, especially in the 450-500 euro bracket. Great deals to be had. I was going to buy a Carrera TDF in Halfords last year...around 400 quid. I decided to go with a Coyote Road Bike from Evans cycles which I got for 225. It was a good bike to start off with but after a few months I upgraded to a Trek 1.2 Alpha that I got for 300 quid because I just got sick of repairing and retuning the Coyote all the time. The Trek was a bit of a steal but the point is it's probably worth investing in a quality bike straight off the mark rather than getting sick of a cheap bike 6 months down the line.

Mentioned already but the B'twin Triban 3 is getting excellent reviews and all say it is the best value new bike around with a spec you would expect to pay at least twice the price for.

The carerra tdf really tempts me as its 409euros an according to reviews is a good entry level bike . I've looked on donedeal at second hand bikes but I honestly wouldnt know where to start . I realistically don't want to go over 500euro as I intend buying some cycling gear also.. Helmet, padded shorts , speedo , shoes etc

The TDF is grand but the 3 is better. Compared to the TDF, it has triple cranks (= more gears), is lighter and has carbon forks. Worth the bother if you can get one.

I also saw some TDFs on adverts ...

They do deliver to Ireland from their Belfast shop. Just put EIRE123 as the post code and your good to go ... My T3 was delivered by them last September

How do you find the Btwin bike. I was thinking fo getting one as a commuter and winter trainer. Aswellas fo use on the turbo. I will be eligible for the BTW scheme again next year so was considering using this to upgarde the wheels and possibly groupset on it when the time comes.

No faults with it at all ... for the money its a great bike. The only upgrade i made was on the wheels, the stock wheels are ok and will be no problem but i had a spare wheelset that i put on it as it was slightly lighter .... but the bike is bang on for the money.

Reserved a. Carerra tdf online through Halfords . Picking it up later . If the triban 3 was more readily available to me I would have probably got that but the tdf is a 20min drive away to pick up an it seems to get good ratings online

Best of luck with it! I have one and love it. Once you look after it you should have no bother. Also, keep an eye on the Cycling Adverts section for some cheap upgrades e.g. I got a full carbon fork for €80.

Not any more unfortunately - they did for a while but they've stopped for some reason.

Before you pick it up, find somebody with AXA car insurance. Then borrow their AXA card. Present it when paying for the bike and you will get 15% off - or €60ish. You don't have to be the card holder.

And best of luck with the bike!

You either have - or are entitled to - an "AXA Card". It's like a loyalty card that gives you a discount in some shops including Halfords, where it gives you a straightforward 15% off (after all the other discounts have been applied).

Sounds like you don't have one - better give 'em a ring so!

The bike price is gone from 409 to 609 in the space of a few hours so I couldn't use the Axa reduction as I bad the bike reserved at the already reduced price of 409.. The guy in Halfords reckons I was lucky that I reserved it when I did .. Anyways all I need is my policy number to avail of the reduced rates . So I may pick up some cycling gear the weekend

Dunno about that. The TDF's price regularly jumps up and down. €400 is at the lower end, but - you should still be entitled to the 15% discount:

I bought a kid's bike at Christmas and it was "reduced" also. And I got the 15% discount. In fact, it got a little complicated with the 3 for 2 offers and then 15% off after that.

I have heard that Halfords don't allow the AXA discount if you are buying on the BTW scheme, but that's only because they typically have to pay a BTW agent's fees so there is less haggle room.

I bought the bike straight for 409 . No BTW . I asked the lad there about the Axa thing and he said the bike was at 409 at a reduced price an the reduction through Axa dosent apply to an item that's already on a reduced rate . I think he was a manager I was design with he seemed to know his stuff anyways but I'm happy with the bike at 409 . Plus 25euro for the 1year bike plan which may come in handy . I will deffo use the Axa reduction for my accessories though . Helmet, padded shorts and possibly SPD pedals ;)

The literally went from 409 back up to 624 in the space of a few hours . Luckily enough I reserved it at 409 lastnight ;)
