I've always hated hills mainly due to the fact of impatient people in cars that don't like getting stuck behind for a period of time :o Does anyone know of any good roads to do some hill training that are relatively free from traffic? (based in D4, but I'm open to suggestions)

    :)

On which roads are you experiencing this?
    Howth is always good.

    Kellysstown Road to three rock
    Ticknock Road to three rock
Slate Cabin Lane to Blue Light pub
    Kilmashogue Lane

Generally car traffic is a rarity on these roads.

Most roads around Wicklow are quiet most of the time. On the 2 weekends of the year that we happen to get blistering sunshine, then people decide to hit the roads. On those days, Ticknock and Kilmashogue are very enjoyable, as ROK ON says.

    +1 on Howth.
Mount Seskin (left turn before Jobstown Service station) off the Blessington Road is another. That will bring you down near Kilbride. You could always head from Kilbride towards the Sally Gap and take the left turn after a couple of km's to Butter Mountain, that's a nice climb - from there Balinascorney will guide you back into town.

D4 out to Finglas, through St Margarets to Drogheda and back through Bellewstown and the Naul is very quiet, and gives you about 110 km and about 1000 m of climbing.

There's also Glenasmole and it's two back-breaking climbs back up to the Featherbeds. You can always go up one and turn around and come back down the other.

Most of the climbs from Rathfarnham are quiet.
Here's 2500m of climbing in 100km riding all starting from around Marley Park
