Beeping when I hit 120 kmph

Bought a second hand car a while ago and every time I hit 120 kph on the motorway it starts beeping........as a purely scientific test to see if it was a limiter that had been installed, I may have went a bit over to see and it did seem to be limited to 130 kph, it's a Peugeot 307 so I suspect the top speed should be slightly higher.

Really the question is, having never seen a car with one installed, is this a limiter, how would I verify that it actually is as surely if it is installed my insurance company would perhaps take that into consideration and lower their cost.....?

If not would it be a big task to get it removed as the beeping gets annoying when I'm hovering around 120 and I go over every now and then.

I have this on a Fiat Punto, it's programmable through the menu options on the car. It doesnt affect insurance.

is your car fitted with a flux capacitor?

I don't think it's limited, very much doubt it

Im guessing its the model with cruise control? with a 'rolling' button on the steering wheel?

should have 'lim' 'off' and 'reg' written on it, with a button above it with a + and below with a -

At a guess the button is on 'lim' roll it off it and see,

    * This is the case with a citroen c4, basically the same motor..,

Top left extract in the pic, is there a button like this on yours?

Edit: Insurance company will ask if you are having a giraffe

no it doesn't have cruise control, nothing on the steering wheel either, should have said it was a 2002 so probably before that came as an optional extra/standard...

I'll check the menu though, only thought it might be a limiter because that's what everyone I mention it to seems to assume as well........also wishful thinking that insurance would get reduced but I can't see of any other reason to use a limiter since they aren't installed for legal reasons I assume. Not important if it's not actually a limiter though.

    That steering wheel is ridiculous!

OP, what you describe doesn't sound like a limiter ( in the sense that it will limit the speed at which you can drive the car ), but rather a speed warning mechanism ... that remains inexplicably active.

However, I'm a little surprised to hear that a 2002 car has one ... even as an optional extra. I'm also surprised that it's not deactivated by switching off the engine and removing the key from the ignition

My 2009 car has that feature ( along with cruise control, as they seem to be bundled together as features ) ... and it's deactivated when turned off. It is a feature I associate with more modern cars.

I'd suggest a quick trip to a Peugeot dealer to turn it off and ( most importantly ) show you how to turn it off/on. They shouldn't charge anything/much for this. Alternatively, if you've got the owners handbook, perhaps look for the info there, or for the fuse arrangement for the car and tackle it less elegantly ;)

OP, is your car a Jap import?

maybe some mis-understanding here, it does sound exactly how you describe, a mechanism that warns me when I go over 120, but it stops as soon as I go under 120 again. Obviously the solution would be to just stay under but when hovering around 120 I tend to accidently go over a little now and then, it's more an irritant than an actual problem I suppose.

yeah I had the car in recently but there were a few other issues that were much more urgent so I actually forgot to ask them about it. doh!

If I can't disable it myself through some menu option, it's likely something I can live with tbh. :D

Some modern cars have speed limiters that can be set from inside the car. Some others have speed limits that can be locked from the ECU with the relevant diagnostic equipment.

    What's the tampon button for?
I don't speak any languages that use Cyrillic.

In Jap imoprts if you go over 100km/h there is a beep or a chime to warn you of your speed.

That used to be the case in the 80's and early 90's on some cars. Hasn't been the case since the move to electronic engine control. Since then the cars are just limited electronically to 180km/h.

    Its an auto-tampon changer,

bit messy for a bloke but,

first example i got from g.i search, hence rooski linguo

    /useless info anyway it seems.

OP your problem reminds me of a little bell that rang once you hit 80pm/h in an old dx corolla i used have, shout at it, it will go away

My guess is someone has enabled "speed limiter" in the bsi (body control unit).
If you get it plugged into peugeot diagnostic equipment then this can be checked within a few minutes..:)

The last one I seen that it was fitted to, was an old Toyota Corona years ago.:p
