sorry if this is in the wrong section but some of the stuff in the Tech section goes over my head so I'd prefer to ask my Agriculture friends. I am looking to get wireless BB in the house. it is a new build with no phone connected yet. I currently have Sky TV which i just got a local Tech guy to move from my last house and set up in the new house - didn't even tell sky i moved. what would people recommend - was looking at UPC, Sky BB, Vodafone, Eircom but only know what i see on the their websites. i am in the midlands area.Ideally, i would like to get the phone, TV and BB bundle from one supplier. thx

Go Eircom if within 5Km from local exchange. At least they have techs that will call to you if in difficulty.

If in a rural area it is unliky that UPC will be a provider. If getting wireless broadband make sure to get the actual download speeds. Mobile broadband is very varible. Very few telcoms providers bungle TV, with phone and broadband in rural area's. Recently comreg allowed eircom to split from a universal line rental to an urban/rural price.

Any landline based product will come over the eircom network even SKY new offering is comimg in on the Eircom landline. I have SKY TV and broadband and phone from Eircom. I see little reason to move to any else as the service level is quite good.

The other reason is that what most other service providers with the exception of UPC and Choras in large urban area's is piggybacking in Eircom's network.

The telephone network is effectively owned by Eircomm but rented out to the other BB companies like Vodafone, Sky etc. If someone is with, say Vodafone BB and have a problem with the line, then Vodafone contract Eircomm to carry out the fault repair. Of course Eircomm will sort their own customers out first.

First and foremost you have to get a line connected. You will have to get this done first before you can start checking line speeds etc. I would discuss with Eircomm a basic package BB on a minimum term. Once the line is connected Eircomm will tell you what your new line can carry in term of speed. Tailor your package to match this.

Once you are established you can then consider offers from other companies. They are all much the same to be honest, but watch for hidden fees, extras, small download allowances (under 20Gb), extended contract terms etc.

All the companies will send you a wireless router of their own choice to connect to the phone line. The supplying company is responsible for the line to where it connects to your house. From the house connection to your phone terminal inside is your responsibility, so you will need a electrician to connect this if you are not capable or confident.

Remember they advertise "Up to" speeds, so almost always your speed will be lower than this.

    Happy surfing.

I would avoid satellite broadband altogether, apart from the fact it can be expensive, slow and the providers usually have tiny usage caps it has terrible latency. So you can't use realtime applications like online gaming, voip phone calls like Skype or work from home through a VPN. Basically satellite broadband is only somewhat useful for downloading things and checking your email.

If you can get UPC, it is far and away the best broadband in Ireland but sadly is pretty much only in urban areas.

Failing that, the usual next option is through a phoneline. This site can help you figure out what exchange is near you and if the exchange is enabled for broadband, if it has ADSL1 (up to 8Mbit/s) or ADSL2 (up to 24 Mbit/s) or if it will have VDSL (50Mbit/s+). http://irelandoffline.org/map/

Next is fixed wireless like westnet mentioned, this relies on line of sight. It can be expensive but is generally reliable so usually what speed you pay for you will get. These have nothing to do with Eircom so you wouldn't need a phoneline. If you wanted a home phone you can use VOIP like blueface or goldfish. http://www.blueface.ie/

Then we have the governments favourite "mobile broadband" or midband as it is known. This is through 3, O2, vodafone, meteor or one of the mobile phone operators. This is wholly unreliable, it all depends on how many people are using the cell at any given time. Not many and the service is adequate, lots and it become unusable. The good news is midband is generally cheap, the bad news is as more and more people use it the worse it will become and 4G isn't going to help much either.

    Clear as mud eh? :)
