Witnessed the most crazy driving from a garda car this morning up at the old Tayto factory on the Malahide road.

Mercy of god that the garda car didnt slam into a bus and a car.

Garda (2 gardai with hi viz yellow jackets) car was outta control.
Car sped around the corner, locked up its brakes and smacked off the kerb/side of the road and bounced back accross the road....missing car and bus by about 1 foot.

Do gardai just get the keys to the car thrown at them..or do they actually have to learn to drive safely at speed though traffic on busy roads??????

Could they have hit a thing of ice and lost some form of control?

"Permission" from a Chief Superintendent used to suffice.

Yes they get training. Quite a lot of it.

Obviously it is quite difficult to train someone on high speed pursuits through busy urban centres though and even then, human error does exist. If it didn't, F1 would be even more boring than it already is.

Most training is on quiet roads, afaik.

Yes guards are given training at high speed and thought how to manuvere through traffic at speed while perusing ..
It's a test and they have to pass the test. Although it doesn't iliminate that a kerb will be hit in future.

I'm pretty sure they get trained but I'd hope they get constant training. Doing a one time course isn't really much good. Driving fast is a skill that requires constant practice. If they're jumping from one car to another it would also be dangerous as the cars could act completely differently from eachother. If they're going to be in car chases they should have one car that they know inside and out.

No ice on the road at 11:45am this morning on the Malahide Road.

Road was dry and the garda car absolutely flew down the road, around the corner at speed, lost control, hit the brakes, whacked off the kerb/side of the road and then bounced back nearly slamming into bus and a car.

Way too fast and wreckless to be in control

With 60% of the force with < 10 years service there's a lot of young fellas still @ the wilder stage as far as driving is concerned! :D

OP if you felt that your life or the life or others (including the driver) were in danger report the matter to the Gardai and the superior officer will investigate (or just ignore you - all depends on their opinion of the situation)

if the garda was driving in an undue manner his/her superior officers can punish him/her.

The garda have to follow some sections of the driving laws too .

Even professional race car drivers lose control so I wouldn't take this one incident as a definite example of the Garda's driving ability.

Although I'd be interested to know if their sirens were roaring or flashing. Surely they can only drive at speed during an emergency with the siren alerting other road users to their presence?

No, one of the guards was hanging out the window spinning his high vis jacket around his head making siren noises. I think the lights were broken..

The majority of drivers have passed nothing more than the standard driving test. Most drive on cheifs permission. Car courses are like hens teeth.

    Love it!

Nearly ploughed out of it a few years back by a Garda car near the Green Isle on the Naas Rd.

Had to move over to the hard shoulder at speed, Garda car came power sliding into my lane,
always remember the look of terror on the young Garda in back of the car as we stared at each other......one of thoses WTF moments.

Would have loved to explain the smack to the insurance company :pac:

Sounds very similar to this case from a few years back. As you can see the ombudsman wasn't even allowed to get involved when there was a death.

Driving on a race track could not be any more different than driving quickly & safely on a public road.

If the car had been driven according to the training they are supposed to receive they would not have even come close to losing control at any point of the drive.

I hear it's compulsory for them to put this song on while in a chase.

Smashing through empty cardboard boxes and vacant outdoor restaurant tables on the footpath are encouraged, too.

Didn't they kill a 74 old woman a few years ago after they ploughed into a bus stop in similar circumstances!
    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/son-says-garda-car-mixup-led-to-mothers-death-26396938.html

"Although there was contradictory evidence as to the state of the road surface, the car and its tyres, Sergeant Colm Finn, who is the senior collision investigator in the region, could provide detailed technical analysis into why in this case they were not the factors which led to the crash and that 'critical speed', ie speed in excess of the maximum safe speed, was the reason for the incident."

The point is if the best drivers in the world can make mistakes so can comparably inexperienced drivers, regardless of the training they receive.

Here we see Garda Mahoney, giving Garda Hightower an intense driving course OP.

    Watch and learn.
