New Carlsberg Ad

Can someone tell me am I missing something in this new ad from Carlsberg?

I get the Spartacus reference, but it seems so arbitrary. Just an excuse to show that Carlsberg are hip because they know about twitter? The production must have cost them a fortune for something that is terribly unimaginative.

The Carlsberg ads are usually funny enough or at least smirkable but this one seems creatively stumped...or am I not getting it?

It's obviously a follow on from their "Great Escape" themed one.
‘Spartacus’, an inspired take on the 1960’s film of the same name, is set in an ultra-modern skyscraper office where hundreds of people are working in an extremely orderly and mundane environment.

The film starts when the intimidating boss of the company enters the room in a fit of rage, demanding to find the culprit of an office prank which resulted in him being depicted as a monkey. Leading the way, the hero ‘Spartacus’ stands up and identifies himself as the prankster.

Demonstrating their loyalty, his fellow colleagues decide to stand up for their mate and join him one by one claiming to be Spartacus as well until the majority of the vast room are standing up in force to take the heat.
‘Spartacus’ ends with the team of workmates heading to the bar for a well-deserved pint of Carlsberg– underlining the brand’s positioning, That calls for a Carlsberg.

Speaking about the new ad, Julie Allman, Senior Brand Manager at Carlsberg, said: “We’re delighted with our new TV ad ‘Spartacus’ which will hopefully excite the Carlsberg drinker and reiterate solidarity amongst friends, something which is embedded in the brand ethos. To coincide with the launch we will be running a themed competition on the Carlsberg Ireland Facebook page, starting on 18th February, to give away Expedia holiday vouchers worth €1,500 and €500 spending money.”

The commercial, developed as a 30 and 60 second ad, was created by London-based creative agency Fold7, in partnership with Carlsberg’s International Brand Marketing Team. The ad will be rolled out across Carlsberg’s global markets, starting in Ireland on 15th February 2013. It will be aired across traditional media and digital channels and will be complemented by a suite of activations, based on the same theme of standing up for your mates, The ad will be supported by substantial media spend in the Irish market.

Ok good job diggin up that info, but I have to say...don't like these new Carlsberg ads. Yes they have my attention because I'm talking about them but they seem so contrived. "Solidarity with your mates"? Haha...how can that be theme associated with the branding of an alcoholic beverage?

Thanks for the info though...just didn't get the point...

This ad makes me change the channel.

Its utter ****e and after "The crate escape" that they put out before i can't believe they followed up with this.

I'm sure it wasn't cheap, but it just seems so lazy...

Welcome to 99% of advertisements out there. The people who come up with these ads call themselves 'creatives' but they're mostly hacks who rob shamelessly.

They call their ads 'films' because they want to believe that they're filmmakers. They're not - they're just sales people, same as the guys who go door-to-door trying to flog you sh*te. The only difference is these lads get paid more and get to play with bigger budgets.
The Carlsberg ads are usually funny enough or at least smirkable but this one seems creatively stumped...or am I not getting it?

    It's not you. It's just a sh*t ad.

It's oirish, it's down with the kids, it shows women socialising with men... What's not to like? It's almost as good as the last great escape ad. Carlsberg ads just get better and better.

Its not "oirish", its an ad made for global release by an English production company called Fold7.

And theres nothing to like about it.

You're bang on the money there, this is more like what beer ads should be.

Also....and this may be controversial...but the new Guinnness ad with the tick tock clock is a load of crap too....Something filmed in b&w set in a stereotypical European town is not gonna make me want to drink Guinness. I think these people are given too much money and are trying to make something artistic...b&w doesn't make it artistic...aghhhh it just irritates me...where is the creativity?
